About this place
Thuparama Pilimage
Thuparama Pilimage (also known as the Thuparama Image House) is a magnificent ancient Buddhist temple located in the historic city of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka. Built during the medieval kingdom era, most historians believe it was constructed during the reign of King Parakramabahu the Great or King Vijayabahu I. It is a key highlights of the famous "Dalada Maluwas" (the Sacred Quadrangle complex).
What makes Thuparama completely unique is its amazing condition. It is the only ancient image house in Polonnaruwa where the massive, vaulted brick roof has survived fully intact for over 900 years. The temple is a masterpiece of South Asian architecture, built entirely out of bricks and a special long lasting mortar mix.
📌Why Should You Visit
🌟Intact Ancient Roof: It is the only place in Polonnaruwa where you can walk inside an ancient image house and look up to see a complete, original brick vault roof above you.
🌟Gedige Architecture: It is a brilliant example of the "Gedige" architectural style a method used to build massive all brick structures with incredibly thick walls.
🌟Spiritual Experience: Walking into the dark, cool inner chamber creates a powerful, quiet atmosphere that connects you directly to centuries of worship.
🌟Beautiful Outer Carvings: The outside walls are decorated with intricate stone and stucco sculptures of mythical animals and buildings that are perfect for history lovers.
📌Other Important Details
The walls of Thuparama Pilimage are exceptionally thick measuring nearly 7 feet across in some places! This extreme thickness was an engineering trick used to support the immense weight of the solid brick roof. Inside the dark inner sanctum, there was once a large seated Buddha statue made of stone, along with several smaller statues. Today, only the ruins of the main stone throne remain. Curiously, the windows of the building are designed to let in only a small amount of natural light. This was done intentionally so that the sunlight would hit the main Buddha statue perfectly at certain times of the day, making it glow softly in the dark room.
📌Things to Do There
✅Walk Inside the Chamber: Go inside to feel the sudden drop in temperature and look up at the ancient, arched ceiling.
✅Study the Exterior Walls: Look closely at the outside facades to spot details of miniature buildings, guardstones, and lion carvings.
✅Capture the Architecture: Take a photo from the outside to show the unique shape of the building against the sky.
✅Explore the Quadrangle: Since it sits inside the Dalada Maluwa, you can easily walk to the Vatadage and Hatadage right next door.
📌How to Get There
Thuparama Pilimage is located right in the center of the Polonnaruwa Ancient City.
🚲By Bicycle: You can easily ride a rented bicycle directly to the Quadrangle entrance. It is the most flexible and fun option.
🛺By Tuk - Tuk: Hire a local driver who knows the ancient site well; they can drop you off right at the main pathway.
🚶By Foot: Once you enter the main archaeological park gate, it is a pleasant walk along well-marked paths to the temple site.
📌What Experience Can Visitors Get
Visiting Thuparama gives you a deep sense of mystery and awe. The moment you step through the stone doorway, the bright tropical heat vanishes, replaced by a cool, echoing stillness. Seeing a roof that has stood strong for nearly a millennium makes you truly appreciate the genius of ancient Sri Lankan builders. It leaves you feeling connected to a deep, peaceful history that text alone cannot explain.
📌Important Tips and Guides
Important Rules for Visitors.
⚠️Dress Appropriately: Because this is a sacred Buddhist site, you must wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees.
⚠️Remove Shoes and Hats: You must take off your shoes and hats before stepping onto the raised temple platform and entering the shrine.
⚠️No Back to the Buddha: When taking photos inside or near the shrine, never stand with your back turned directly toward the Buddha statues or thrones.
⚠️Bring a Small Flashlight: The inside room is very dark, so a small light helps you safely see the floor and ceiling details without using a camera flash.
Thuparama Pilimage is an architectural treasure that has survived the tests of time, war, and weather. Its standing brick roof and peaceful energy make it an essential, unforgettable stop for anyone exploring the ancient wonders of Polonnaruwa.
