About Us
Buduruwagala Raja Maha Viharaya
Buduruwagala is a very old and beautiful Buddhist temple found in the Moneragala district, near a town called Wellawaya. The name itself means “the rock of Buddhist sculptures.” It is famous for having seven giant statues carved right into the face of a huge rock. The most amazing part is the standing Buddha statue in the middle, which is about 51 feet tall! This makes it the tallest standing Buddha statue in all of Sri Lanka. These carvings are more than 1,000 years old, dating back to the 9th or 10th century.
📌Why Should Visit
✅ Tallest Statue: You can see the tallest ancient standing Buddha statue in the country.
✅ Unique Art: The statues belong to the “Mahayana” school of Buddhism, which is a bit different from the art you see in many other Sri Lankan temples.
✅ Peaceful Nature: The temple is hidden inside a quiet forest area, away from the noisy city, making it very calm.
✅ Historical Magic: It is incredible to see how people carved such huge and detailed figures into solid rock so long ago.
📌Other Important Details
↔️ Mystery Oil: There is a small hole carved like a flame near the main statue that always smells like mustard oil and stays wet, but nobody knows where the oil comes from!
↔️ Ancient Paint: If you look closely, you can still see traces of orange and white paint on the statues from hundreds of years ago.
↔️ Elephant Rock: Some people say the big rock where the statues are carved looks like a kneeling elephant with its head down.
📌Things to Do
🌟 Admire the Carvings: Take time to look at all seven statues, including the figures of Bodhisattvas and a female deity called Tara.
🌟 Photography: Capture the massive scale of the statues against the forest backdrop.
🌟 Visit the Lake: There is a beautiful lake nearby (Buduruwagala Wewa) where you can see birds and enjoy the breeze.
🌟 Visit the Museum: There is a small archaeological museum at the entrance where you can learn more about the site.
📌How to Get There
🚌 By Bus: Take a bus to Wellawaya town. From there, you can catch a local bus heading towards Thanamalwila and get off at the Buduruwagala junction.
🛺 By Tuk - Tuk: The easiest way is to hire a tuk - tuk from Wellawaya town; it is only about a 15 - 20 minute drive (around 5 - 6 km).
🚗 By Car: If you are driving from Ella or Thanamalwila, look for the signpost on the A4 road and turn onto the well-paved Buduruwagala Road.
📌What Experience Visitors Can Get
Visitors often feel a deep sense of peace and wonder here. Because it is a “hidden gem,” it is rarely crowded with tourists. You can walk through the trees, hear the birds, and suddenly see these massive, ancient faces looking down at you. It feels like stepping back in time to a very spiritual and quiet era of Sri Lankan history.
