About Us

Maduru Oya National Park

Maduru Oya National Park is a beautiful and quiet wildlife park located in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1983 to protect the land around the famous Maduru Oya Reservoir. The park is spread over the Eastern and Uva provinces. When you look around, you will see tall “Guinea grass,” big rocks, and calm water. It is very famous for its large herds of elephants. Unlike busy parks, this place is peaceful and full of undisturbed nature. It is also home to the Vedda people, the indigenous community of Sri Lanka.

📌Why You Should Visit

✅ Elephant Sanctuary: It is one of the best places to see elephants in their natural home without too many jeeps around.

✅ Water Protection: It protects the water for five big reservoirs, making it vital for nature and farming.

✅ Ancient History: It has amazing ancient ruins hidden inside the jungle.

✅ Indigenous Culture: You can learn about the Vedda community living in Henanigala near the park.

📌Other Important Details

One of the most amazing things here is the Ancient Sluice Gate. It was built thousands of years ago (before the 6th century BC). It is made of stone slabs and bricks. This shows that ancient people in Sri Lanka had great engineering skills to control water long before modern machines. It is a masterpiece of history sitting right inside the park!

📌Things to Do There

Here are the best activities for you

🌟 Jeep Safari: Go on a morning or evening ride to spot elephants, leopards, and sloth bears.

🌟 Bird Watching: Look for colorful birds like the Painted Stork and White-bellied Sea Eagle.

🌟 Photography: Take beautiful photos of the reservoir and animals.

🌟 Visit Ruins: See the ancient sluice gate and old temple ruins.

🌟 Camping: Stay overnight in a campsite to hear the sounds of the jungle.

🌟 Boat Rides: Enjoy a calm ride on the reservoir.

📌How to Get There

Getting to Maduru Oya takes some time, but the drive is nice.

🚗 From Colombo: The distance is about 288 km.

🚗 Route: Colombo ➔ Kurunegala ➔ Dambulla ➔ Habarana ➔ Polonnaruwa ➔ Manampitiya ➔ Maduru Oya.

🚗 Travel Time: It usually takes about 5 to 6 hours by car.

🚂 By Train: You can take a train to Polonnaruwa or Welikanda and then take a taxi.

📌What Experience Visitors Can Get

Visitors often feel a sense of peace and isolation. Since it is not crowded, you feel like you have the whole park to yourself. A common and magical experience is watching elephants swimming or bathing in the reservoir at sunset. The tall grass makes the animals appear and disappear like magic. It is a raw and authentic wildlife adventure.

📌Important Tips and Guides

⚠️ Best Time: Visit between May and September (dry season) for the best animal sightings.

⚠️ Safety: Do not get out of your jeep unless the guide says it is safe.

⚠️ Wear: Wear light cotton clothes, a hat, and sunglasses.

⚠️ Protection: Bring insect repellent because there can be mosquitoes.

⚠️ Quiet: Keep your voice down to not scare the animals.

Maduru Oya National Park is a hidden gem in Sri Lanka. It offers a perfect mix of wildlife, ancient history, and culture without the crowds. If you want a quiet, real jungle experience where you can see elephants swimming freely, this is the perfect place for you.
