📌 The Gateway to the East

The Manampitiya Bridge is one of the longest bridges in Sri Lanka. It is actually two bridges side-by-side! There is an old steel bridge built a long time ago (in 1922) and a newer, wider bridge built in 2007. It crosses the famous Mahaweli River, which is the longest river in the country. The bridge is about 302 meters long and connects the North Central Province with the Eastern Province.

Getting to Manampitiya Bridge is easy! 

📍 Location: It is located on the A11 Main Road (Habarana-Polonnaruwa-Batticaloa road).

🚌 From Polonnaruwa: It is just about 10km away from Polonnaruwa town. You can take a bus heading to Batticaloa or hire a tuk-tuk.

🚂 By Train: You can take a train to the Manampitiya Railway Station, which is very close to the bridge.

Visiting this place gives you a mix of nature and engineering. You can feel the cool breeze from the Mahaweli River. Walking near the bridge lets you see how people traveled in the past (on the narrow iron bridge) compared to how they travel today. It feels like a journey through time!

⚠️ Traffic Safety: The new bridge is a busy highway. Be very careful if you are walking or taking photos near the road.

⚠️ Do Not Swim: The Mahaweli River can be deep and has strong currents here. It is safer to look from the bank than to get in the water.

⚠️ Keep it Clean: Please do not throw trash into the river or on the bridge. Keep the environment beautiful.
