Nelum Wewa Hot Springs

The Nelum Wewa Hot Springs are a unique natural wonder located in the Polonnaruwa district of Sri Lanka. Unlike other hot springs found on land, these are special because they are situated inside a lake (Nelum Wewa tank). They are located on a small sandy island or sandbank in the middle of the water.

These springs were only made public recently, around 2009, although villagers knew about them for a long time. The water here is very hot, reaching temperatures of about 61°C to 62°C, making them the hottest springs in the country. Because they are inside a tank, they can sometimes be covered by water during the rainy season.

 – Reach Sewanapitiya Junction (about 23km from Polonnaruwa).

 – Turn Left at the junction towards Nelum Wewa.

 – Travel about 4km to 6km past Gal Wewa to reach Nelum Wewa.
