Sathmahal Prasadaya

The Sathmahal Prasadaya is one of the most unusual and mysterious ancient structures in Sri Lanka. Located in the northeast corner of the famous Dalada Maluva (The Quadrangle) in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, it stands out instantly from everything else around it. Unlike the traditional round stupas you see across the country, this is a square, seven-storied stepped pyramid built out of brick and plaster.

Each level gets smaller as it goes up, giving it a distinct tower like look. While it is widely believed to be a unique type of stupa, its design looks very similar to ancient temples found in Cambodia and Thailand. Today, only six levels remain fully intact, with the seventh level mostly ruined, but it still stands tall as a fascinating piece of history that leaves travelers and historians amazed.

📌Why Should You Visit

🌟 One of a Kind Architecture: It is the only seven storied stepped pyramid stupa you can see in Sri Lanka. It looks completely different from standard stupas.

🌟 International History Connections: This building is strong proof of the cultural and religious ties Sri Lanka shared with Southeast Asian kingdoms like Siam (Thailand) and the Khmer Empire (Cambodia) centuries ago.

🌟 Perfect for Photos: The rugged, ancient brickwork against the green trees makes it an incredibly eye-catching spot for travel photography.

🌟 Right in the Center: It is located inside the Quadrangle, meaning you can explore it along with several other world-famous ruins without walking far.

📌Other Important Details

↔️ Who Built It: Historians generally believe it was built by King Parakramabahu the Great (1153 - 1186 AD). Some stories say it was built for the Cambodian soldiers who were working in the king's army.

↔️ The Structure: It has a square base, and there are steps on the side leading up. On each side of the different levels, you can still see nice plaster carvings and small arched niches where statues used to be kept.

↔️ The Niches: Look closely at each floor, and you will notice small openings or doorways. These niches once held beautiful statues, and you can still see remnants of the ancient plasterwork today.

📌Things to Do There

✅ Walk Around the Quadrangle: Take a slow walk around the base to appreciate how the building shrinks layer by layer.

✅ Spot the Ancient Sculptures: Look closely at the remaining plaster figures and statues inside the small wall niches on each floor.

✅ Capture the Perfect Angle: Snap photos from the pathway to capture the full height of all six remaining levels in one frame.

✅ Explore the Neighbors: Since you are in the Quadrangle, easily walk over to the Polonnaruwa Vatadage, Hatadage, and Gal Pota which are just meters away.

📌How to Get There

📍 Location: It is inside the Dalada Maluva (The Quadrangle) in the Ancient City area of Polonnaruwa.

🚲 Inside the Ruins: The best way to travel inside the Polonnaruwa sacred site is by renting a bicycle or taking a tuk-tuk.

🚗 From Polonnaruwa Town: The main entrance to the ancient city is just a 5 to 10 minute drive or ride from the town center.

🚌 From Colombo: You can take a direct bus or drive from Colombo to Polonnaruwa, which is about 230 km away and takes around 5 to 6 hours.

📌What Experience Can Visitors Get

Visiting Sathmahal Prasadaya feels like stepping into a historical mystery novel. Because the design is so different from regular Sri Lankan Buddhist structures, it sparks a sense of curiosity. You will feel a deep appreciation for ancient building methods as you look up at the surviving levels. The site is usually peaceful, allowing you to quietly stand back, listen to the wind through the trees, and imagine the ancient city when it was fully alive with kings, monks, and foreign soldiers.

📌Important Tips and Guides

⚠️ Dress Correctly: Since this is a sacred archaeological site, you must wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees.

⚠️ Beat the Heat: The open stone grounds get very hot by midday. Visit early in the morning (around 7:00 AM) or late in the afternoon to avoid the burning sun.

⚠️ Bring Socks: You will need to take off your shoes at the entrance of the Quadrangle. The stone paths get burning hot, so wearing thick socks will save your feet!

⚠️ Do Not Climb: It is strictly forbidden to climb up the steps of the pyramid to protect the fragile ancient bricks.

⚠️ Photo Etiquette: Never stand with your back facing a religious structure or any remaining statue for a photo, as it is considered disrespectful.

The Sathmahal Prasadaya is a true hidden gem among the massive ruins of Polonnaruwa. It breaks the mold of traditional Sri Lankan design and gives us a wonderful look into how different ancient cultures influenced each other. If you are planning a trip to the cultural triangle, spending a few minutes marveling at this unique brick tower is an absolute must!
