About Us

Panama Wewa

Panama Wewa is a large, beautiful lake found in a small village called Panama in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. It is located about 12 to 15 kilometers south of the famous surfing spot, Arugam Bay. While it looks peaceful with its calm water and green trees, it is actually famous for being home to many wild crocodiles. People often call it "Crocodile Point" because you can see dozens of these predators resting on the banks or floating in the water. It is a great place to see nature in its wildest form without any fences.

 📌  Why Should You Visit?

⭐  See Crocodiles: It is one of the easiest places in Sri Lanka to see large crocodiles in their natural home for free.

⭐  Beautiful Views: The lake is surrounded by lush greenery, making it a perfect spot for sunset and sunrise photos.

⭐  Bird Watching: Since it is near the Kumana Bird Sanctuary, you can see many rare and colorful birds here.

⭐  Quiet Escape: It is much calmer and less crowded than the busy tourist areas of Arugam Bay.

 📌  Other Important Details

Panama Wewa is not just a tourist spot; it is an ancient irrigation tank. Farmers in the village use this water to grow rice and other crops. There is also a very old temple nearby called Panama Wewe Vehera, which sits on a small hill and gives you a great view of the whole area. The village itself is very traditional, and the people here have lived the same simple way for hundreds of years.

 📌  Things to Do There

↔️  Photography: Take amazing shots of the lake, the forest, and the wildlife.

↔️  Crocodile Spotting: Walk along the high bund (the wall of the lake) to look for crocodiles from a safe distance.

↔️  Cycling: Rent a bike and ride through the village roads leading to the lake to see local farming life.

↔️  Visit Temples: Check out the nearby ancient Buddhist and Hindu temples like Okanda Murugan Devalaya.

 📌  How to Get There

🛵  From Arugam Bay: The best way is to rent a scooter or take a tuk-tuk. It is a short 20-minute drive through beautiful scenic roads.

🚗  From Colombo: It is a long journey (about 7 hours). You can take the Southern Expressway towards Mattala and then drive through Wellawaya and Monaragala to reach Panama.

🚌 By Bus:  You can take a bus to Pottuvil and then catch a local bus or tuk-tuk to Panama village.

📌  What Experience Can Visitors Get?

Visiting Panama Wewa feels like stepping into a wild kingdom. You get a mix of peace and excitement. One moment you are looking at a beautiful pink lotus flower, and the next moment you see a giant crocodile sliding into the water. It gives you a real taste of the "untouched" Sri Lanka, where nature and village life go hand in hand.

 📌  Important Tips and Guides

⚠️  Stay Back: Never walk right up to the water’s edge. Crocodiles are very fast and can hide just under the surface. Stay at least 5 meters away.

⚠️  No Swimming: Do not try to swim or even dip your feet in the water. It is extremely dangerous.

⚠️  Watch Your Bags: There are many monkeys around that might try to steal your snacks.

⚠️  Timing: The best time to visit is in the early morning or late afternoon when it is cooler and the animals are more active.

⚠️  Beware of Scams: Some people might offer to show you crocodiles for a high price. You can see them easily on your own for free from the main path.

If you love nature and a bit of adventure, Panama Wewa is a place you cannot miss. It is raw, wild, and incredibly beautiful. Just remember to keep a safe distance from the water, and you will have an unforgettable experience watching Sri Lanka's wildlife in a stunning setting.
