About Us

Horton Plains National Park

Horton Plains National Park is a beautiful, chilly highland area in central Sri Lanka. It sits on a high plateau and is covered by wild grasslands and thick “cloud forests.” It is famous for its stunning views, misty weather, and the famous World’s End cliff. Many people visit to see the unique plants and animals that only live in this cold part of the island.

📌Why Should Visit

✅ Amazing Views: You can see for miles from the top of high cliffs.

✅ Cool Weather: It is a great break from the tropical heat of the rest of the country.

✅ Wildlife: It is one of the best places to see the large Sambar deer and rare birds.

✅ Nature Walks: The hiking trails are well-marked and perfect for people who love fresh air.

📌Other Important Details

↔️ Elevation: It is about 2,100 to 2,300 meters above sea level.

↔️ UNESCO Site: It is part of the Central Highlands World Heritage site.

↔️ Plastic Free: The park is a strict “no plastic” zone to protect the environment. Officers will check your bags at the entrance.

📌Things to Do

🌟 Hike to World’s End: This is a famous cliff with a drop of nearly 900 meters.

🌟 Visit Baker’s Falls: A beautiful, wide waterfall named after a famous explorer.

🌟 Photography: Capture the mist rising over the golden grasses at sunrise.

🌟 Bird Watching: Look for the Dull blue Flycatcher or the Yellow eared Bulbul.

📌How to Get There

🚂 By Train: Take the train to Ohiya or Pattipola station. From there, you can hire a van or a tuk - tuk to the park gate.

🚗 By Car/Van: Most visitors stay in Nuwara Eliya (about 1 hour away) or Haputale and drive to the park early in the morning.

📌What Experience Visitors Can Get

Visiting Horton Plains feels like walking through a different world. In the morning, it is very quiet and peaceful with dew on the grass. You get the thrill of standing on the edge of a massive cliff at World’s End and the calm feeling of walking through a quiet forest where the only sound is the wind and birds.

📌Important Tips and Guides

⚠️ Start Early: Aim to reach the gate by 6:00 AM. The mist usually covers the view at World’s End by 9:00 AM.

⚠️ Wear Layers: It is very cold in the morning but can get warm once you start walking.

⚠️ No Littering: Do not take plastic wrappers or water bottles with labels. If you have them, the guards will give you paper bags or remove the labels.

⚠️ Stay on the Path: For your safety and to protect the plants, do not wander off the marked trails.

Horton Plains is a must visit for anyone who loves nature and hiking. With its misty plains, beautiful waterfalls, and the breathtaking World’s End, it offers a peaceful and refreshing experience that you won’t find anywhere else in Sri Lanka.
