Duwa Island
Duwa Island is a beautiful and peaceful village island located in Negombo, Sri Lanka. It sits right inside the calm waters of the Negombo Lagoon. The island is connected to the main Negombo town by a lagoon bridge and a causeway road, making it very easy to reach. Duwa is mostly known for its traditional fishing community, lovely water views, and deep flowing Christian heritage. It is a fantastic spot if you want to escape the busy city life and enjoy a relaxed, natural environment.
📌Why Should You Visit
🌟 Rich History: Duwa Island has a history that goes back over 400 years. It is incredibly famous for hosting Sri Lanka's oldest and most well known Passion Play during the Easter Holy Week.

📌Other Important Details
The majority of the people living on Duwa Island are Roman Catholics. When the Portuguese arrived in the 16th century, many locals converted to Christianity. Because of this heavy religious history and the many beautiful churches around, Negombo is often called "Little Rome," and Duwa Island sits right at the heart of this cultural identity.
📌Things to Do There
✅ Take a Scenic Boat Ride: You can hop on a boat from the mainland jetty for a short, beautiful ride across the lagoon water to look for birds and fish.
✅ Explore the Village & Churches: Walk or ride a tuk - tuk around the small village roads to see the old Catholic setups and meet the friendly locals.
✅ Enjoy Fresh Seafood: Since it is a fishing village, you can taste incredibly fresh lagoon crabs, prawns, and fish cooked in traditional Sri Lankan spices.
✅ Relax in a Cabana: There are quiet spots and resorts along the water where you can rent a small cabana to enjoy a meal with a view.
📌How to Get There
🚗 By Road: Since the island is connected to Negombo by a lagoon bridge/causeway, you can easily drive there using a car, bike, or local tuk - tuk from Negombo town. It is only about 15 to 20 minutes away from the main town center.
⛵ By Boat: If you want a bit of adventure, you can head to the Pitipana area jetty and take a quick 3 minute boat ride across to the island resorts. The boat ticket usually costs around Rs.100 per person.

Visitors can expect a very authentic, laid back island lifestyle experience. You will see traditional fishing boats (oruwas) resting on the shores and nets being laid out. It gives you a feeling of stepping back in time, listening to the gentle movement of the lagoon water, watching beautiful sunsets, and experiencing genuine local hospitality.
