About Us

Mahaoya Hot Springs

Mahaoya Hot Springs are famous for being the hottest natural springs in Sri Lanka. They are located in a quiet, rural village surrounded by green trees and paddy fields. There are seven water wells here. The water in these wells is naturally very hot, reaching temperatures up to 56°C (133°F).

The area is well maintained and has walls around the wells for privacy. Out of the seven wells, usually only two or three have water at a temperature safe for bathing. The others are too hot! It is a simple, peaceful place where people come to relax and enjoy the warm water gifted by nature.

📌Why Should You Visit

✅ Therapeutic Water: The water is rich in minerals like sulfur. Many people believe this warm water can help cure skin problems and joint pain (arthritis).

✅ Relaxation: Soaking in the warm water helps your muscles relax and reduces stress.

✅ The Hottest: It is a unique experience to see the hottest springs in the entire country.

✅ Nature: It is located away from the busy city, offering a calm environment.

📌Other Important Details

↔️ Management: The site is managed by the local government (Pradeshiya Sabha).

↔️ Ticket Price: There is a small entrance fee (usually around Rs. 50 - Rs. 100 for locals, higher for foreigners).

↔️ History: Legends say these springs have been used for centuries, even by ancient kings, for their healing powers.

📌Things to Do There

📍 Distance: It is about 240 km from Colombo and 65 km from Batticaloa.

🚌 By Bus: Take a bus from Colombo towards Ampara or Batticaloa that goes through Mahiyangana. Get off at Mahaoya town. From the town, you can take a tuk - tuk (about 2 km) to the springs.

📌Visitor Experience

Visitors often feel refreshed after the bath. The heat of the water feels very good on tired legs and backs. The place is simple and local, so don’t expect a luxury spa. It is a true Sri Lankan village experience. You might meet friendly locals who are also there to bathe.

📌Important Tips and Guides

⚠️ Check the Heat: Always touch the water with your hand before pouring it on your body. Some wells are very hot and can burn you!

⚠️ Hydrate: Drink plenty of water because the heat can make you thirsty.

⚠️ Slippery Floor: The ground can be wet and slippery. Walk carefully.

⚠️ Soap: Do not use soap inside the wells to keep the water clean. Use the designated changing rooms/areas.

⚠️ Clothing: Wear modest swimwear. Public nudity is not allowed.

⚠️ Best Time: Go early in the morning (6 AM - 9 AM) or late evening to avoid the hot sun and big crowds.

Mahaoya Hot Springs is a hidden gem in Sri Lanka. It is the perfect place for anyone looking for wellness, relaxation, and a touch of adventure. Whether you want to heal your body or just enjoy nature’s warm water, a visit here is a memory you will keep forever.
