The Ravana Falls

Ravana Ella is a stunning three tier waterfall that drops about 25 meters (82 feet). It is located right next to the main road connecting Ella and Wellawaya. The waterfall is famous not just for its beauty but also for its connection to the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. During the rainy season, the water gushes down with great force, looking like a wide curtain of white foam against the dark rocks.

✅ Legendary History: It is believed that King Ravana hid Princess Sita in a cave behind this waterfall.

✅ Easy Access: You don’t need to hike for hours to see it; it is right by the roadside!

↔️ Location: Approximately 6 km away from the Ella town center.

↔️ Best Time to Visit: Between January and March or August and September for clear weather. However, it looks most powerful right after the monsoon rains.

↔️ Entry Fee: Currently, there is no official ticket price to view the falls from the bridge or the roadside.

🚌 By Bus: Take any bus heading from Ella towards Wellawaya. The ride takes about 10 - 15 minutes.

🛺 By Tuk - Tuk: You can easily hire a tuk - tuk from Ella town for a quick and scenic trip.

🛵 By Scooter: Renting a scooter is a popular way for tourists to visit the falls and other nearby spots at their own pace.


📌What Experience Visitors Can Get

Visitors can feel the refreshing cool mist on their faces as they stand near the falls. It is a place where history and nature meet. You get a sense of wonder thinking about the ancient legends while enjoying the cool breeze of the Sri Lankan hill country. It’s a great spot for a quick break during a long road trip.

⚠️ Stay Safe: Do not try to climb the wet rocks. They are very slippery and can be extremely dangerous.

⚠️ No Swimming: Swimming is generally discouraged, especially during the rainy season, as water levels can rise suddenly.

⚠️ Don’t Feed Monkeys: It’s best not to feed the monkeys as they can become aggressive or grab your bags.
