The Demodara Railway Loop

The Demodara Railway Loop is a world-famous engineering marvel located in the green hills of Sri Lanka, very close to the popular town of Ella. It is a special part of the railway where the track winds around a mountain and then passes under itself through a tunnel. This “spiral” design helps the train climb the steep hills easily. The Demodara Railway Station actually sits right on top of the tunnel where the train passes through!

🛺 By Tuk-Tuk: You can hire a tuk-tuk from Ella town. It’s about a 15-minute drive (6km).

🚶 On Foot: If you like hiking, you can walk along the tracks from Ella. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
