About Us

Galpota

GalPota which literally translates to "Stone Book", is one of the most unbelievable and massive historic records you will ever see in Sri Lanka. Located right inside the sacred Quadrangle Dalada Maluwa of the Polonnaruwa Ancient Kingdom, this is not a book made of paper, but a gigantic, solid slab of granite stone! Commissioned by King Nissanka Malla in the 12th century, this massive stone book measures about 27 feet in length and nearly 5 feet in width. The surface of the stone is completely covered in ancient Sinhala inscriptions that praise the king’s great works, his family line, and his rules for governance. It stands as a brilliant example of ancient literature, royal propaganda, and monumental stonework

📌Why Should You Visit

✅ World’s Largest Stone Book: It is widely considered one of the largest and longest single-piece rock inscriptions found anywhere in Sri Lanka.
✅ Amazing Ancient Engineering: Learning how the ancient builders brought this massive, multi-ton stone from miles away will blow your mind.
✅Blawless Ancient Writing: The letters are carved so neatly into rows that it looks exactly like a page taken out of a modern giant notebook.
✅A Feast for History Lovers : It gives you a direct, unfiltered look into how ancient kings declared their power and laws to the public.

📌Other Important Details

➡️ Historical Era:  Polonnaruwa Kingdom Period (12th Century).

➡️ Built/Ordered By: King Nissanka Malla (1187–1196 AD).

➡️ Dimensions: Roughly 26 feet 10 inches long, 4 feet 7 inches wide, and varies from 1 to 2 feet in thickness.

➡️ The Origin Secret: According to the text carved right on the stone, this massive slab was not mined in Polonnaruwa! It was hauled all the way from Sithulpawwa (Mihintale) by the king's strong soldiers—a distance of over 90 kilometers!

➡️ Artistic Borders: The side edges of the stone are beautifully decorated with carvings of two rows of small elephants and a depiction of Goddess Lakshmi holding lotuses.

 📌 Things to Do There

⭐  Inspect the Ancient Letters: Get up close to see the beautiful, rounded ancient Sinhala script characters. Notice how perfectly straight the lines are!

⭐  Count the Carved Elephants: Look closely at the narrow side panels of the stone slab to spot the rows of tiny, adorable walking elephants carved into the rock.

⭐ Take Perspective Photos:  Stand next to the stone book to capture a photograph that truly shows its massive scale compared to a human.

⭐  Explore the Royal Quadrangle:  Since it sits right on the Dalada Maluwa platform, take a quick walk to see the neighboring Hatadage, Vatadage, and Nissanka Latha Mandapaya.

 📌 How to Get There

📜 Location: Located on the eastern side of the main Quadrangle (Dalada Maluwa) complex within the Polonnaruwa Archaeological Park.

📜 From Polonnaruwa Town: The site is just about 3.5 km away from the main New Town bus stand. You can hop into a local tuk-tuk or drive your vehicle directly to the park's main parking area.

📜 The Best Route: Just like exploring the rest of the sacred city, renting a bicycle from the ticketing office or your guest house is the most relaxing way to reach this spot.

📌 What Experience Can Visitors Get

Standing next to the Gal Pota gives you an overwhelming sense of awe regarding ancient human capability. When you realize that this single rock weighs around  15 to 20 tons and was pulled across mountains, rivers, and forests without any modern machinery, you gain deep respect for the ancient Sri Lankan workforce. The open-air setting lets you walk fully around it, making you feel like an archaeologist uncovering secrets from 800 years ago.

📌Important Tips and Guides

⚠️  Respect the Dress Code: The Gal Pota sits inside a highly sacred monastic complex. Please ensure you wear clothing that covers both your knees and shoulders.

⚠️  Watch the Footwear: You will be required to take off your shoes when stepping onto the main raised platforms of the Quadrangle.

⚠️  Be Smart About the Sun:  Because there is no roof over the Gal Pota, the stone surroundings get incredibly hot by midday. Try to plan your visit between 7:30 AM and 9:30 AM or after 4:00 PM so you don't burn your feet!

⚠️  Strictly No Stepping/Sitting:  To protect the ancient inscriptions from fading away, visitors are strictly prohibited from stepping, sitting, or leaning on the stone book.

The Gal Pota is much more than just a regular stone ruin; it is a giant, surviving voice of a 12th-century king frozen in time. Its incredible size, long transport journey, and detailed carvings make it one of the absolute highlights of the Polonnaruwa ancient tour. When you plan your next trip to dayout in Polonnaruwa, make sure to stop by and check out this wonderful "Stone Book"
