About Us

Nissanka Latha Mandapaya

Nissanka Latha Mandapaya is a truly unique ancient structure located in the sacred quadrangle (Dalada Maluwa) of the Polonnaruwa ancient kingdom in Sri Lanka. Built by King Nissanka Malla during his reign (1187–1196 AD), this monument stands out from every other ancient building in the country. The name translates to "Nissanka's Flower Scroll Hall," which perfectly describes its artistic design. It is a small, elevated stone platform surrounded by a beautifully carved stone railing that looks like an ancient wooden fence. The most captivating feature of this hall is its eight stone pillars. Instead of standard straight columns, these pillars are intricately carved to mimic the natural, curving stems of lotus flowers, topped with unopened lotus buds. In the center of the platform sits a small stone stupa, though it has sustained damage over the centuries. This hall serves as a magnificent testament to the artistic creativity and architectural brilliance of the Polonnaruwa era.

 📌 Why Should You Visit

🌸  One-of-a-Kind Architecture: It is the only ancient building in Sri Lanka featuring curved stone pillars shaped exactly like real lotus stems.

🌸 Royal History: It gives you a direct look into how King Nissanka Malla blended his religious devotion with unique royal luxury.

🌸 Photographer's Dream: The artistic layout, the stone fence, and the way the sunlight hits the curved pillars make it one of the most eye-catching locations for travel photography.

🌸 Central Location: It is located right inside the Dalada Maluwa, meaning you can explore it alongside several other massive historical monuments without walking far.

 📌Other Important Details

💎 Historical Era: Polonnaruwa Kingdom period (12th Century AD).

💎 Built By: King Nissanka Malla.

💎  The Purpose: Historical records and inscriptions state that the king used this specific open-air hall to sit and listen to the chanting of Buddhist scriptures (Pirith).

💎 The Roof Mystery: Archeologists believe that the stone pillars originally supported a light, wooden roof structure that protected the king from the sun, which has completely washed away with time.

📌Things to Do There

📜 Examine the Lotus Pillars: Get a close look at the master craftsmanship of the eight pillars to see how the stone waves gently like a real flower stem.

📜 View the Stone Railing: Notice the stone fence surrounding the platform, which was carved to look exactly like a traditional post-and-rail wooden fence.

📜 Read Nearby Inscriptions: Look for ancient rock inscriptions nearby that tell stories about King Nissanka Malla’s works and rules.

📜 Explore the Quadrangle: Since you are already in the Dalada Maluwa, take time to visit the neighboring Vatadage, Hatadage, and Thuparama Image House.

 📌How to Get There

🚗From Colombo: You can drive or take a taxi via the Maradankadawala-Habarana-Thirukkondaiadimadu Highway (A11). It takes about 4.5 to 5 hours.

🚌 By Bus: You can catch a direct bus from Colombo (Route 48 to Kaduruwela/Polonnaruwa) which drops you off near the ancient city entrance.

🚂 By Train: Take the train from Colombo Fort to the Polonnaruwa railway station, and then take a short tuk-tuk ride to the ancient site.

🚲Inside the Ruin Site: Once you buy your ticket at the main museum, renting a bicycle is the easiest, most popular way to ride between the monuments.

 📌What Experience Can Visitors Get

Visiting this site feels like stepping straight into an ancient royal garden. Because the building is open-air and small compared to giant stupas, it feels incredibly personal. Standing in front of the platform, you can easily picture the ancient king sitting in the center, surrounded by chanting monks while a soft breeze blows through the open pillars. The peace of the surrounding green lawns combined with the striking look of the stone artwork leaves visitors with a deep appreciation for ancient Sri Lankan imagination.

 📌  Important Tips and Guides

☀️   Dress Code: This is a highly sacred religious site. You must wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. White or light-colored clothing is highly recommended.

☀️   Footwear Rule: You will need to take off your shoes and hat before stepping onto the sacred stone platforms.

☀️   Beat the Heat: The stone floors get incredibly hot under the midday sun. It is best to visit early in the morning (7:30 AM – 9:30 AM) or late in the afternoon (4:00 PM – 6:00 PM) to avoid burning your feet. Bring thick socks if you have sensitive feet!

☀️   Respect the Ruins: Do not lean against, sit on, or touch the ancient stone pillars and railings, as the oil from human skin can damage the ancient stone over time.

The Nissanka Latha Mandapaya might be smaller than the giant structures nearby, but its artistic beauty is unmatched. It perfectly shows how ancient Sri Lankan builders could turn heavy, solid stone into something that looks light, elegant, and alive like a lotus flower. If you are planning a trip to the Polonnaruwa ancient kingdom, taking a few quiet moments to admire this royal hall is an absolute must!
