About Us

Olu Ella Falls

Olu Ella is a breathtaking waterfall located in the quiet village of Yatiyantota in the Kegalle District. Standing at about 127 meters high, it is often called the tallest waterfall in the Paanapitiya area. The falls get their name because the water looks like a white “Olu” (Water Lily) flower as it cascades down the rocks. It is unique because it flows under a historic wooden bridge, making it a very photogenic and peaceful spot for nature lovers.

📌Why Should Visit

✅ Natural Beauty: It is one of the most serene and less crowded waterfalls in Sri Lanka.

✅ Historic Bridge: You can see one of the oldest wooden bridges in the country still in use right at the base of the falls.

✅ Cool Atmosphere: The mist from the water and the surrounding green forest keep the air fresh and cool.

✅ Great for Photography: The combination of the tall falls and the rustic bridge provides a perfect backdrop for photos.

📌Other Important Details

↔️ Water Source: The waterfall is fed by the Wee Oya, which eventually joins the Kelani River.

↔️ The Bridge: The bridge is made of heavy wooden planks and is strong enough for small vehicles to pass over.

↔️ Best Time to Visit: It is most beautiful during the rainy season (usually May to September) when the water volume is high.

📌Things to Do

🌟 Take Photos: Capture the view of the falls from the wooden bridge.

🌟 Relaxing Walks: Enjoy a quiet walk through the nearby tea estates and village roads.

🌟 Picnic: There are several spots nearby where you can sit and enjoy the sound of the rushing water.

🌟 Nature Watching: Look out for local birds and lush tropical plants surrounding the area.

📌How to Get There

🚗  From Colombo: Drive toward Avissawella and then head to Yatiyantota.

🚗 The Route: From Yatiyantota town, take the road toward Seeepoth area (Poonapitiya Road).

🚗 The Drive: The road is narrow and winds through beautiful tea estates for about 15 - 20 kilometers. It is best to use a small car, van, or motorbike.

📌What Experience Visitors Can Get

Visitors can expect a very calm and “off-the-beaten-path” experience. Unlike more famous waterfalls, Olu Ella feels very private and untouched. You will feel the spray of cold water on your face as you stand on the bridge and hear the loud, soothing roar of the falls. It is a great place to clear your mind and enjoy the simple beauty of the Sri Lankan countryside.

📌Important Tips and Guides

⚠️ Stay Safe: The rocks near the water can be very slippery. Do not try to climb the falls.

⚠️ Drive Carefully: The road from Yatiyantota is narrow with many sharp bends.

⚠️ Keep it Clean: Please do not leave any plastic or trash behind. Keep this natural wonder beautiful.

⚠️ Check the Weather: If there has been very heavy rain, the water can become very powerful and brown; it’s safest to view it from the bridge.

Olu Ella Falls is a hidden gem that offers a mix of history and natural beauty. Whether you are a photographer or just someone looking for a quiet escape from the city, this waterfall is a must-see. Its height and the charming wooden bridge make it a truly special destination in the heart of Sri Lanka.
