Bible Rock
Bible Rock, known locally as Bathalegala, is a spectacular mountain landmark situated in the Kegalle District of Sri Lanka, near the town of Aranayaka. Rising about 798 meters above sea level, this mountain stands out due to its unique box-like, flat-topped shape. It strongly resembles a massive open book or the famous Sigiriya fortress from a distance. Surrounded by beautiful green valleys, rubber plantations, and cascading waterfalls, Bible Rock is a highly popular destination for day-hikers who want an easy-to-moderate climb with a massive reward at the top.
📌 Why Should You Visit?
📖 Unique Architecture: It is one of the very few flat-topped square mountains in Sri Lanka, making it an incredible sight to see and photograph.
📖 Beginner-Friendly Hike: Unlike many rugged mountain peaks, the path up Bible Rock is relatively straightforward and short, making it perfect for casual hikers and families.
📖 Amazing Neighbors: From the top, you get a direct, clear view of its sister mountains, including the mighty Alagalla Range and Utuwankanda.
📖 Spiritual Atmosphere: The summit houses a quiet, peaceful Buddhist monastery and temple, giving the entire peak a calm and sacred energy.
📌 Other Important Details
↔️ The English Name: European colonial sailors and travelers named it "Bible Rock" because when you see it from the sea or the lowlands, its flat, rectangular shape looks exactly like a giant open bible.
↔️ A Holy Summit: The top of the mountain is not just bare rock. It features a beautifully constructed Buddhist temple, a small stupa, and living quarters for meditating monks.
↔️ Ancient Caves: Along the sides of the mountain, there are natural stone caves that were used by ancient hermits and monks for meditation centuries ago.
↔️ Perfect Picnic Ground: Because the top is completely flat and covered in soft grass and trees, it acts as a massive, natural rooftop park with plenty of space to relax.
📌 Things to Do There
✅ Enjoy a Nature Trek: Walk up the winding trails shaded by large trees and watch local birds and butterflies along the way.
✅ Capture 360-Degree Views: Walk to the edge of the flat cliffs to take mind-blowing photos of the green Aranayaka valley below.
✅ Visit the Bathalegala Temple: Take off your shoes and quietly explore the peaceful temple grounds and the small white stupa sitting on the rock.
✅ Watch a Magical Sunrise: If you start your climb very early, you can watch the sun rise out of the misty mountain gaps in the east.
📌 How to Get There
🚌 By Public Bus: Take a bus from Kegalle or Mawanella to the small town of Aranayaka. From Aranayaka, you can take a local bus heading towards Hathgampola and get off at the foothill village where the trail begins.
🛺 By Tuk-Tuk: You can easily hire a tuk-tuk from the Mawanella town clock tower or highway junction. The driver can take you up the winding rural roads directly to the concrete steps at the base of the mountain trail.
🚗 By Private Vehicle: Drive along the Colombo-Kandy road and turn off at Mawanella towards Aranayaka. Follow the village roads up to the designated parking spot near the base temple. The roads are narrow and steep, so careful driving is required.
📌 What Experience Can Visitors Get?
Hiking up Bible Rock feels like walking into a peaceful mountain sanctuary. The journey begins with the pleasant sounds of village life and running water from nearby streams. As you climb higher up the stone steps and gravel paths, the air becomes cooler and crisper. Standing on the vast, flat summit feels incredibly safe and spacious compared to other sharp peaks. You get a deep sense of calm as you hear the soft chanting of monks or the gentle chiming of a temple bell, all while watching clouds float right past your shoulders.
📌 Important Tips and Guides
⚠️ Respect the Sacred Site: Because there is an active Buddhist monastery at the top, remember to dress decently (cover your shoulders and knees) and maintain silence near the temple area.
⚠️ Bring Your Own Snacks: There are no shops or food stalls at the top of the mountain. Carry enough drinking water and some light snacks to keep your energy up.
⚠️ Midday Heat Warning: The final stretch of the climb and the top platform are completely exposed to the sun. Try to finish your ascent before 10:00 AM or climb after 3:30 PM to avoid the scorching sun.
⚠️ Zero Waste: Please do not leave any plastic bottles, polythene covers, or food wrappers behind. Bring all your trash back down to protect the clean temple environment.
Bible Rock (Bathalegala) is a true hidden gem that offers the perfect blend of natural adventure and spiritual peace. It does not require expert mountaineering skills, yet it delivers some of the most breathtaking highland views in Sri Lanka. Whether you are a solo backpacker, a group of friends, or traveling with family, a trip to this giant open book of nature will leave you with a refreshed mind and an unforgettable experience.
