About Us

Nine Arch Bridge

The Nine Arch Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks in Sri Lanka. Located in the mountain village of Ella, this bridge is often called the “Bridge in the Sky.” It was built in 1921 during the British colonial period. It is huge about 91 meters (300 feet) long and 24 meters (80 feet) high. What makes it amazing is that it is built entirely out of rocks, bricks, and cement. There is no steel used in the structure at all! It stands surrounded by green tea fields and tall jungle trees, making it look like a scene from a movie.

📌Why Should Visit

You should visit because it is a perfect mix of history and nature.

✅ Photos: It is one of the best places in Sri Lanka for Instagram photos.

✅ The Views: Seeing the famous blue train cross the old stone arches against the green forest is magical.

✅ Engineering: It is cool to see a giant bridge made without any metal holding it up.

📌Other Important Details

↔️ History: The story goes that when the bridge was being built, World War I started. The steel meant for the bridge was taken for the war. A local Sri Lankan builder named P.K. Appuhami stepped in and finished it using only stone and cement!

↔️ Name: It is called “Nine Arch” because it has nine big arches. Locals also call it “Ahas Namaye Palama,” which means “Nine Skies Bridge,” because when you stand below it, you can see the sky through the nine arches.

📌Things to Do

🌟 Walk on the bridge: You are allowed to walk right on the railway tracks and the bridge itself (just be careful!).

🌟 Watch the train: Wait for the train to pass by. It usually comes a few times a day.

🌟 Visit a cafe: Hike up to nearby cafes like the “Asanka Cafe” for a view from the top while drinking tea.

🌟 Explore below: Walk down into the tea plantations to see how huge the bridge looks from the bottom.

📌How to Get There

Getting there is easy from Ella Town.

🛺 Tuk - Tuk: This is the easiest way. It takes about 10 - 15 minutes and costs a small amount .

🚶 Walk: You can walk from Ella station along the train tracks. It takes about 30 - 40 minutes and is a nice walk.

📍 Jungle Trail: There is a jungle path from the road near Little Adam’s Peak that leads straight to the bridge.

📌What Experience Visitors Can Get

Visiting the bridge feels peaceful and exciting at the same time. If you go early in the morning, the air is cool and misty, and it feels very quiet. When the train comes, everyone gets excited, waving to the passengers hanging out of the windows. It is a very happy and friendly atmosphere.

📌Important Tips and Guides

⚠️ Warning: This is an active railway line. Trains do come! Listen for the horn and move off the tracks immediately when you hear it.

⚠️ Best Time: Go at sunrise (around 6:00 AM) to avoid big crowds and get the best light.

⚠️ Safety: If it has rained, watch out for leeches in the tea bushes below the bridge.

⚠️ No Barriers: The bridge has no side rails. Do not stand too close to the edge.

Nine Arch Bridge is more than just a bridge; it is a symbol of Sri Lanka. Whether you love history, photography, or just nature, this place has something for you. It is a free, simple, and beautiful experience you will never forget.
