Elgin Falls

Elgin Falls is a beautiful waterfall hidden in the hills of Sri Lanka. It is about 25 meters (82 feet) high and sits 1,500 meters above sea level. You can find it near the city of Nuwara Eliya, right inside the Elgin tea estate. Many people see it for the first time while looking out of a train window! It is surrounded by green tea plants and misty mountains, making it look like a picture from a storybook.

📌How to Get There 

🚂 By Train: Take the train between Nanu Oya and Ambewela stations. If you look out the window at the right time, you will see the waterfall clearly.

🚶 By Hiking: You can walk about 4.5 km from the Ambewela railway station along the tracks.

🚶 By Hiking: Or, you can drive to the Elgin Estate and walk through a jungle path for about 2 km


📌What Experience Visitors Can Get

Visitors get a mix of adventure and peace. The hike can be a bit of a challenge, but seeing the water crash down the rocks makes it worth it. You will hear the loud roar of the water and feel the cold mist on your face. It is a great way to escape busy life and enjoy the natural beauty of the Sri Lankan highlands.


📌Important Tips and Guides 

⚠️ Wear Good Shoes: The paths can be very slippery and muddy, so make sure your shoes have a good grip.

⚠️ Watch the Weather: The best time to see the waterfall is during the rainy season (May to September), but the path is much more dangerous then.

⚠️ Bring Your Own Supplies: There are no shops near the waterfall. Bring plenty of water and some snacks.

⚠️ Don’t Go Alone: The forest path can be hard to find. It is always safer to go with a guide or a friend.


Elgin Falls is a must see for anyone visiting the hill country of Sri Lanka. Whether you just watch it from the train or hike all the way to the bottom, its beauty is something you will always remember. It is a perfect spot to see nature at its best!
