Aberdeen Falls

Aberdeen Falls is a stunning waterfall found in the Nuwara Eliya district, near a town called Ginigathhena. It stands about 98 meters tall, making it the 18th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. The water comes from the Kehelgamu Oya river and flows down in two beautiful levels into a large, deep pool at the bottom. The falls are surrounded by thick green forests and misty mountains, giving it a magical feel. It is named after Aberdeen, a famous city in Scotland, because of the British tea planters who lived in this area long ago.

🚗 By Car / Taxi: It is about a 2 hour drive from Nuwara Eliya or a 4 hour drive from Colombo. You need to reach Ginigathhena town first and then follow the road to the trailhead.

🚌 By Public Transport: You can take a bus to Ginigathhena from Colombo, Kandy, or Hatton. From the town, you can hire a tuk-tuk to take you to the entrance of the hiking path.

🚶 The Walk: Once you park, you will need to walk for about 1.2 kilometers down a path with many steps to see the falls up close.

Visitors can expect a refreshing and calm experience. The air is cool and smells like wet earth and trees. When you stand near the base, you will feel a light mist on your face from the crashing water. 📌Important Tips and Guides 

⚠️ Swimming Danger: Do not swim in the middle of the pool! It is very deep and has “quicksand” (mud) at the bottom. People have drowned here, so stay near the rocky edges or just look from the platform.

⚠️ Leech Alert: Since it’s a rainforest, there are many leeches. Wear long socks or use lime/salt to keep them away.

⚠️ Good Shoes: The path is steep and can be very slippery when wet. Do not wear flip flops; wear shoes with a good grip.

⚠️ Trash: There are no trash bins, so please bring a bag to take your rubbish back with you.
