Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu is the largest and oldest national park in Sri Lanka. It is located on the northwest coast, spread across the Puttalam and Anuradhapura districts. The name “Wilpattu” comes from the word “Villu,” which means natural lakes. There are over 60 of these lakes throughout the park! It covers a huge area of about 1,317 square kilometers and is filled with thick forests, open grasslands, and sandy rimmed lakes.

🚗 By Car/Van: From Colombo, it takes about 4 hours via the Puttalam road.

🚌 By Bus: There is no direct bus to the park entrance. You can take a bus from Colombo to Puttalam or Anuradhapura, and then take a Tuk-Tuk to the Hunuwilgama (main) entrance.

🚂 By Train: You can take a train from Colombo to Anuradhapura or Thalawa and then hire a vehicle for the rest of the 1-hour trip.

Visiting Wilpattu feels like a real adventure in the wild. Since there are fewer tourists, you get a very authentic and quiet experience. You might drive for an hour seeing only trees and then suddenly come across a sloth bear crossing the road or a leopard drinking water by a lake. ⚠️ Start Early: The park opens at 6:00 AM. Wildlife is most active in the early morning and late afternoon.
