The Dutch Fort
The Negombo Dutch Fort is a historic landmark located in the coastal town of Negombo, Sri Lanka. Originally built by the Portuguese and later captured and rebuilt by the Dutch in the 1670s, it sits right near the lagoon and the sea. Today, while much of the original structure is gone, the impressive gateway and parts of the high walls still stand, telling stories of the town's colonial past. It is a peaceful spot where history meets the daily life of the local fishing community.
📌 Why Should You Visit
✅ Historical Charm: It is one of the best places to see the colonial influence on Sri Lanka's architecture.
✅ Great Photos: The old stone walls and the gateway look beautiful, especially during the "golden hour" before sunset.
✅ Local Life: It is right next to the famous Negombo fish market, so you get to see the real, bustling side of the town.
✅ Easy Access: It’s very close to the international airport, making it a perfect quick stop if you just arrived or are about to leave the country.
📌 Other Important Details
An interesting fact about this fort is that the British later used it as a prison in the late 1800s. Even today, part of the fort grounds is still used as a local prison, which is quite unusual for a tourist site! Because of this, some areas are restricted, but you can still walk around the main ramparts and the green space outside.
📌 Things to Do There
✅ Explore the Gateway: Take a close look at the 1678 date carved into the stone entrance.
✅ Walk the Walls: Climb up the remaining ramparts for a view of the ocean and the lagoon.
✅ Visit the Fish Market: Just a short walk away is the "Lellama" (fish market) where you can see hundreds of boats and fresh seafood.
✅ Picnic on the Green: There is a large open area in front of the fort where locals often play cricket or fly kites.
📌 How to Get There
🛺 By Tuk-Tuk: This is the easiest way. Any driver in Negombo town will know the "Dutch Fort." It’s only a 5-10 minute ride from the main hotel strip (Lewis Place).
🚌 By Bus: Take a bus to the Negombo Main Bus Stand. From there, it is about a 15-minute walk or a very short rickshaw ride.
📍 From the Airport: It is about 20 minutes away by car or taxi from Bandaranaike International Airport.
📌 What Experience Can Visitors Get
Visiting the fort feels like stepping back in time. You will feel the salty sea breeze and hear the sounds of the nearby market. It’s not a "polished" tourist trap; instead, it feels very authentic. You’ll see old arches, massive green trees, and the calm waters of the lagoon. It’s a great place to relax and think about the many people—Portuguese, Dutch, British, and Sri Lankan—who have walked those same paths over hundreds of years.
📌 Important Tips and Guides
✅ aspect the Rules: Since part of the fort is still a prison, do not try to enter restricted gates or take photos of the prison staff.
✅ Best Time to Visit: Go early in the morning (around 7:00 AM) to see the fish market at its busiest, or late afternoon (around 5:00 PM) for the best weather.
✅ Dress Comfortably: It can get very hot and humid, so wear light clothes and a hat.
✅Stay Hydrated: There aren't many shops inside the fort ruins, so bring a bottle of water with you.
The Negombo Dutch Fort is a small but mighty piece of history. It may not be the biggest fort in Sri Lanka, but its location by the sea and its connection to the local fishing culture make it a must-see. If you want a quick and easy way to soak up some culture and history in Negombo, this is the place to go!
