Somawathiya National Park

Somawathiya National Park is a very special wildlife park located in the Polonnaruwa district. It is famous for two big reasons: it has a very holy temple called the Somawathiya Chaitya, and it is home to many wild elephants. It is situated in the delta of the Mahaweli River, which means the area has many grassy plains and small lakes (called “Villus”).

You should visit Somawathiya because it is the only place where nature and religion come together so perfectly.

✅ Home of Tuskers: This park is famous for having the highest number of Tuskers (male elephants with long tusks) in Sri Lanka. It is rare to see them in other parks.

↔️ The River: The mighty Mahaweli River flows through this park. During the rainy season, the river floods, and much of the park goes underwater.

↔️ The Legend: The Stupa was built thousands of years ago. It was lost in the jungle for a long time before being rediscovered.

↔️ Wildlife: Apart from elephants, you can see deer, buffalo, jackals, and many birds. Even leopards live here, though they are shy.

🌟 Visit the Temple: Go to the Somawathiya Stupa to pray and offer flowers. It is a very peaceful place.

🌟 Jeep Safari: Take a 4×4 jeep ride to see the wild elephants. The best time is usually in the late afternoon.

📌 How to Get There 

Somawathiya is located about 40-50 km from Polonnaruwa town.

🚗 From Polonnaruwa: Take the road towards Sungavila. From the Sungavila wildlife barrier, you enter the park area.

🚙 Road Condition: The road leads through villages and then into the jungle. In the dry season, a normal van can go up to the temple. But for a safari inside the park trails, you need a jeep.

🚙 Rainy Season: Be careful—during heavy rains, the road to the temple can get flooded and become impassable.

Visitors get a mix of spiritual peace and wildlife adventure. You start your journey by worshipping at the holy temple, which makes you feel calm. 📌 Important Tips and Guides 

⚠️ Respect the Temple: Since there is a temple inside, dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees) when you are near the Stupa area.

⚠️ Best Time: The best time to visit is during the dry season (usually June to September) when the roads are dry and animals come out to drink water.

⚠️ Muddy Roads: If it has rained recently, the tracks can be very muddy. You definitely need a 4WD vehicle.

⚠️ Be Quiet: Loud noises can scare the animals and disturb the pilgrims at the temple.
