The Devil’s Staircase

The Devil’s Staircase is one of the most famous and thrilling trekking paths in Sri Lanka. Located in the central highlands, it connects the misty village of Ohiya to the beautiful town of Bambarakanda. This trail got its name because it is very steep, rugged, and zigzagged, making it a bit of a challenge for travelers. Along the way, you will see endless green tea estates, deep valleys, and the tallest waterfall in the country

📌Why Should Visit

✅ Amazing Views: You get a bird’s eye view of the mountains and the plains below.

✅ Highest Waterfall: You will pass by the majestic Bambarakanda Falls, which is the highest in Sri Lanka.

✅ Adventure: It is a great way to test your fitness and enjoy the fresh mountain air away from city noise.

📌Other Important Details

↔️ Distance: The trek is about 14 kilometers long.

↔️ Difficulty: It is considered a “moderate” hike. While it’s not impossible, you need to be ready to walk on rocky and uneven paths.

↔️ Weather: It can get very misty and cold, or even rainy, quite suddenly.

📌Things to Do

🌟 Photography: Capture the winding roads and the famous “V cut” (a narrow pass cut through a hill).

🌟 Hiking & Trekking: Spend 3 to 4 hours walking through the scenic tea gardens.

🌟 Natural Bath: Take a cold, refreshing dip in the natural pools near the waterfalls.

🌟 Camping: There are spots nearby where you can set up a tent and watch the stars.

📌How to Get There

🚂 By Train: Take the train to Ohiya Station. This is the most popular starting point.

🚗 By Road: You can take a bus or car to Kalupahana (on the Colombo - Badulla road) and start the climb from the bottom, or head to Ohiya to walk downhill.

🚗 Vehicle Note: Only 4×4 vehicles or motorbikes can handle these broken roads if you aren’t walking.

📌What Experience Visitors Can Get

Visiting the Devil’s Staircase feels like stepping into a different world. You will experience the quietness of the mountains, the smell of fresh tea leaves, and a great sense of achievement when you finish the long walk. The “V cut” area provides a dramatic view that makes you feel very small against the giant mountains.

📌Important Tips and Guides

⚠️ Wear Good Shoes: Don’t wear flip flops! Use hiking boots or sneakers with a good grip.

⚠️ Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water and some snacks, as there are no shops in the middle of the trail.

⚠️ Leech Protection: Since it’s a damp area, there might be leeches. Carry some lime or salt to keep them away.

⚠️ Start Early: Aim to start by 7:00 AM or 8:00 AM to avoid the afternoon mist and heavy rain.

The Devil’s Staircase is more than just a road; it is an unforgettable journey through the heart of Sri Lanka’s hill country. Whether you are an expert hiker or just looking for a beautiful walk, the stunning views and the roar of the waterfalls make every step worth it.
