Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Dewalaya

 Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Dewalaya is one of the most sacred and oldest temples in Sri Lanka. It is located in the town of Kataragama in the Southern part of the island. This place is very special because people from different religions, like Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and even the indigenous Vedda people, come here to pray together.The temple is dedicated to God Kataragama (also known as Lord Murugan or Skanda). Unlike many other temples, the main building is very simple and does not have a large statue of the god inside. Instead, there is a sacred curtain. The temple sits next to the beautiful Menik Ganga (Gem River), and the air is always filled with the smell of jasmine flowers and burning incense.

🚗 By Car: From Colombo, you can take the Southern Expressway (E01). It takes about 4 to 5 hours to reach Kataragama.

🚌 By Bus: There are direct "Kataragama" buses leaving from the Colombo Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal regularly.

🚆 By Train: You can take a train from Colombo to Beliatta and then take a bus or taxi for the rest of the journey.

 📌  What Experience Can Visitors Get?

Visitors can feel a deep sense of culture and tradition. When you walk on the hot sand with bare feet, hear the loud "Haro Hara" chants from devotees, and see the bright colors of the offerings, it feels like stepping into a different world. During the Esala Perahera festival (July/August), you can even see fire-walking and amazing parades with elephants and dancers.
