About Us

Negombo Lagoon

Negombo Lagoon is a giant, beautiful body of water located on the west coast of Sri Lanka. It covers a huge area—about 3,500 hectares! It isn't just a lake; it’s a "coastal wetland" where fresh water from rivers meets the salty ocean.

The lagoon is famous for its calm, shallow waters and the thick green mangrove forests that grow all around it. It sits right next to Negombo town and is very close to the main international airport. For many travelers, this is the very first or last natural beauty they see in Sri Lanka. It is a quiet world of its own, filled with colorful fishing boats and amazing wildlife.

 📌 Why Should You Visit

↔️Bird Watcher's Heaven: If you love birds, this is the place to be. You can see over 190 types of birds here!

↔️Easy to Reach: It is only a 15-minute drive from the airport, making it a perfect quick getaway.

↔️Authentic Culture: You get to see how local fishermen have lived for hundreds of years.

↔️Peaceful Nature: It’s a great break from the noisy city life. The water is usually very still and relaxing.

 📌 Other Important Details

↔️ Historical Spice Route: Long ago, the Dutch used the lagoon and its canals to transport cinnamon and other valuable spices.

↔️ Eco-System Guard: The mangrove trees here are like nature's bodyguards. They protect the land from big waves and provide a "nursery" for baby fish and prawns to grow safely.

↔️ Unique Water: Because it's a mix of salt and fresh water (called "brackish water"), it produces some of the tastiest crabs and prawns in the world!

 📌 Things to Do There

✅ Lagoon Boat Safari: Hop on a small motorboat or a traditional "Oruwa" (sailing canoe) to explore the hidden corners of the lagoon.

✅ Visit Monkey Island: There is a small island in the lagoon where friendly monkeys live. You can even bring them some bananas!

✅ Kayaking: If you want some exercise, you can rent a kayak and paddle through the narrow mangrove tunnels.

✅ Watch Traditional Fishing: See how locals use hand-cast nets to catch their daily food.

✅ Visit the Lellama (Fish Market): Located at the edge of the lagoon, this is one of the busiest and most colorful fish markets in the country.

 📌 How to Get There

🛺 From the Airport: It’s just a 10–15 minute taxi or tuk-tuk ride away.

🚌 From Colombo: You can take the "Expressway" bus or a private car, and you’ll be there in about 45 minutes to an hour.

🚂By Train: Take a scenic train from Colombo Fort to Negombo Station, which takes about 1.5 hours.

📌 What Experience Can Visitors Get

🌟 Golden Sunsets: The sky turns bright orange and pink, reflecting perfectly on the still water.

🌟 Nature Sounds: Instead of car horns, you’ll hear the calls of kingfishers and the splashing of fish.

🌟 Local Hospitality: The boatmen are usually very friendly and love to share stories about the lagoon.

🌟 A Slow Pace of Life: It’s a place that reminds you to slow down and just enjoy the moment.

 📌 Important Tips and Guides

⚠️ Wear a Life Jacket: Even though the water is shallow, always wear a life jacket during boat rides for safety.

⚠️ Sun Protection: The sun can be very strong on the open water. Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

⚠️ Go Early or Late: The best times are early morning (6:00 AM) or late afternoon (4:30 PM) to avoid the heat and see more birds.

⚠️ Respect the Wildlife: Do not throw plastic or trash into the water.

⚠️ Cash is King: Most boat operators and local vendors only take cash (Sri Lankan Rupees).

Negombo Lagoon is more than just water; it is a lively mix of history, nature, and local tradition. Whether you are a nature lover, a photographer, or just someone looking for a quiet boat ride before a flight, this lagoon is a "must-see" gem. It’s a simple, beautiful experience that shows you the true heart of Sri Lanka’s coastal life.
