About Us

Dunsinane Falls

Dunsinane Falls is a beautiful waterfall found in the Nuwara Eliya district of Sri Lanka. It is also known as Pundalu Oya Falls. This waterfall is about 100 meters high and is split into two main parts. The top part is wide and easy to see from the road, while the bottom part is hidden under a bridge. It is located right between two famous tea estates called Dunsinane and Sheen.

📌Why Should Visit

✅ You should visit this place because it is very unique and peaceful.

✅ Unlike many other waterfalls, this one has statues of Hindu gods right in the middle of the flowing water! It is surrounded by bright green tea gardens and is a great spot to enjoy nature without the big crowds found at other tourist sites.

📌Other Important Details

↔️ Historical Name: The name “Dunsinane” comes from a famous hill in Scotland mentioned in Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth.

↔️ Old Estate: The Dunsinane tea estate is one of the oldest in Sri Lanka, starting all the way back in the 1870s.

↔️ Water Source: The water comes from the Pundalu Oya river, which eventually flows into the Kotmale Reservoir.

📌Things to Do

🌟 Photography: Take amazing photos of the upper falls and the colorful statues in the water.

🌟 Walk: Take a gentle walk through the nearby tea plantations to see how tea is grown.

🌟 Visit the Temple: There is a small Hindu temple (Kovil) near the bridge where you can see local culture.

🌟 Relax: Simply sit and enjoy the cool mist and the sound of the falling water.

📌How to Get There

🚗 Dunsinane Falls is about 23 kilometers away from Nuwara Eliya town.

🚗 The best way to get there is by hiring a taxi or taking a bus towards Pundaluoya. The drive takes about an hour because the roads are narrow and have many turns. If you are coming from Colombo, you can reach it via Gampola or the Hatton road.

📌What Experience Visitors Can Get

Visitors get a feeling of calm and wonder. The sight of the goddess Saraswati statue standing in the middle of the rushing water creates a very spiritual atmosphere. You also get to experience the authentic “Upcountry” life, seeing tea pluckers at work and feeling the fresh, cool mountain air.

📌Important Tips and Guides

⚠️ Road Safety: The roads are very curvy and narrow, so drive carefully or hire an experienced driver.

⚠️ High Security: Do not try to climb down to the bottom part of the falls. It is very steep and is part of a high-security zone for a power project.

⚠️ Respect: Since there are religious statues and a temple, please be respectful and keep the area clean.

⚠️ Footwear: Wear shoes with a good grip if you plan to walk on the paths near the tea estates.

Dunsinane Falls is a hidden treasure in Sri Lanka’s hill country. It perfectly mixes natural beauty with local culture and history. If you are traveling near Nuwara Eliya, it is definitely worth a stop to see the “flowing” goddess and the misty green hills!
