🏛 History:

📜 Bentota has a rich historical background, with references to the region as Bhimatirtha in ancient texts, such as the Mahavamsa and Pujavaliya.
🛕 The area was home to the Galapatha Viharaya, which is believed to have been a complex of five ancient temples.
🏯 During the 17th century, the Portuguese built a fort at the mouth of the Bentota River, known as Parangi Kotuwa, marking the southern boundary of Portuguese-controlled territory in Sri Lanka.
 The Dutch later allowed the fort to fall into disrepair, converting it into a rest house for colonial officers.
 The British transformed the rest house into a coastal sanatorium.
🚂 The arrival of the railway in the 19th century further connected Bentota to the rest of the country, supporting the transportation of coconut produce.

🚆 Transport:

🚄 Rail: The Southern Railway Line runs through the area, with most trains stopping at Aluthgama, located just 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) north.
🛣 Road: Bentota is accessible via the A2 highway, which connects Colombo to Wellawaya, and is approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) south of Beruwala.
🛣 Expressway: The Southern Expressway can also be accessed via the Welipenna exit, just 10 km from Bentota.
🚁 Air: Helicopter shuttle services are available on a charter basis.

🌿 Brief Garden: Located 11 kilometers inland from Bentota, this garden was created by renowned Sri Lankan landscape architect Bevis Bawa, the older brother of famous architect Geoffrey Bawa. Established in 1929 on the grounds of a former rubber plantation, the garden showcases a blend of tropical plants, sculptures, and peaceful pathways.
🛕 Galapatha Raja Maha Vihara: This ancient Buddhist temple in Bentota features stone inscriptions, carvings, and medieval architectural elements, offering insight into the region’s spiritual and historical heritage.
