Bahirawakanda Temple

Bahirawakanda Vihara is one of the most iconic landmarks in Kandy. It is world-famous for its giant white Buddha statue that can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. The temple is officially named Sri Dalada Tapowana Vihara and sits on top of Bahirawakanda hill.

Because it is located on a high point, it serves as a perfect lookout spot. The statue itself shows the Buddha in the "Nirvana" or meditative pose. It is a very peaceful place that offers a break from the noisy and busy streets of Kandy town.

 📌  Why Should You Visit?

✅  The Giant Statue: At about 88 feet tall, it is one of the largest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka.

✅  Best City View: You get a perfect bird’s-eye view of the Kandy Lake, the Temple of the Tooth, and the cricket stadium.

✅  Photo Opportunity: It is the best place to take panoramic photos of the "Hill Capital."

✅  Night Beauty: The statue is lit up at night and looks like a glowing star hanging over the city.

 📌 Other Important Details

↔️  History: Work on the statue began in 1972 and was completed in 1993.

↔️  The Legend: The name "Bahirawakanda" means "Gnome Mountain." Old stories say people once believed a powerful spirit lived here.

↔️  Entrance Fee: There is a small fee for foreign tourists, usually around 300 to 600 LKR. Locals can usually enter for free or a very small donation.

↔️  Accessibility: There are stairs to climb, but they are not too difficult for most people.

 📌 Things to Do There

📜  Climb Behind the Statue: You can walk up the stairs built into the back of the statue to reach a higher viewing gallery.

📜  Offer Flowers: You can buy flowers at the entrance to offer at the shrine.

📜  Meditate: Find a quiet corner to sit and enjoy the calm atmosphere.

📜  Visit the Small Museum: Look at the paintings and smaller statues inside the temple rooms at the base.

 📌  How to Get There

🛺   By Tuk-Tuk: This is the most popular way. It takes about 10-15 minutes from Kandy city center.

🚶  Walking: You can walk up the hill from the Kandy railway station area. It is a steep walk that takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

📍  Location: It is only about 2 km away from the main Kandy town.

📌 What Experience Can Visitors Get?

Visitors will experience a mix of spiritual calm and visual wonder. Looking up at the massive white statue makes you feel very small, but looking down at the city makes you feel like you are on top of the world. The sound of temple bells and the cool breeze from the mountains make the visit very refreshing.

 📌   Important Tips and Guides

✅  Dress Properly: Since this is a religious site, you must cover your shoulders and knees. Carrying a shawl is a good idea.

✅  Shoe Storage: You must remove your shoes at the entrance. There is a safe place to leave them for a very small tip.

✅  Hot Floors: During mid-day, the stone floor can get very hot. It is a good idea to wear socks so your feet don't burn.

✅  Monkeys: Watch out for monkeys! Don't keep food in your hands or leave your bags unattended.

Bahirawakanda Temple is more than just a religious site; it is a symbol of Kandy. Whether you are a pilgrim or a tourist, the giant Buddha and the incredible views make it a "must-visit" spot. It is the perfect place to see the beauty of Kandy all at once!
