Anawilundawa Bird Sanctuary
Anawilundawa Bird Sanctuary is a hidden treasure located in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka, specifically between Chilaw and Puttalam. It is a unique place where three different ecosystems meet: the coast, the mangroves, and the freshwater tanks.
Spread across about 1,397 hectares, this sanctuary is famous for its “cascading tank system.” These are six man made tanks Pinkattiya, Maradansola, Anawilundawa, Suruwila, Maiyawa, and Iraiwila that were built long ago to store water for farming. Today, they serve as a vital home for hundreds of species of birds, making it one of the few Ramsar Wetlands in Sri Lanka. It’s a peaceful, green escape where nature truly takes the lead.
📌Why Should Visit
✅ Birdwatcher’s Dream: You can see over 150 species of birds, including those that fly thousands of miles from cold countries to stay here during the winter.
✅ Unique Nature: It’s rare to see tanks, mangroves, and the ocean so close together.
✅ Peace and Quiet: Unlike some busy tourist spots, Anawilundawa is very calm and perfect for a relaxing day trip.
✅ Global Importance: Because it is a Ramsar site, you are visiting a wetland that is protected and recognized internationally for its biodiversity.
📌Other Important Details
↔️ History: The tanks were originally built in the 12th century! They show how ancient Sri Lankans managed water perfectly.
↔️ Biodiversity: Besides birds, you might spot butterflies, dragonflies, and even small mammals like fishing cats or monitors.
↔️ Best Time to Visit: The best months are from October to April. This is when the “migratory birds” arrive to escape the winter in the north.
📌Things to Do
🌟 Photography: Capture stunning shots of storks, herons, and kingfishers against the water.

📌How to Get There
🚗 By Car / Van: It is about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from Colombo. You take the Colombo - Puttalam main road.
🚂 By Train: You can take a train towards Bangadeniya. From the Bangadeniya railway station, the sanctuary is just a short tuk - tuk ride away.
📍 Location Tip: Look for the turn off near the 92km post on the Puttalam road.
📌What Experience Visitors Can Get
Visiting Anawilundawa feels like stepping into a different world. You will hear the constant “orchestra” of bird calls instead of traffic noise. The air is fresh, and the sight of thousands of birds taking flight at once is something you will never forget. It’s a very grounding experience that reminds you how beautiful and fragile our natural world is.
📌Important Tips and Guides
⚠️ Early Bird Gets the View: The best time to see the birds is very early in the morning (6:00 AM - 8:00 AM) or late in the afternoon.
⚠️ Keep it Quiet: Birds are easily scared by loud noises. Talk softly and move slowly.
⚠️ No Littering: This is a protected area. Please take all your trash back with you.
⚠️ Stay Hydrated: It can get quite hot, so bring plenty of water and wear a hat.
⚠️ Safety Warning: Be careful near the water edges as the ground can be slippery, and keep an eye out for crocodiles in the deeper sections of the tanks.
Anawilundawa Bird Sanctuary is a must visit for anyone looking to connect with nature. Whether you are a serious bird expert or just someone who wants a quiet walk in a beautiful setting, this wetland offers a refreshing break from the daily grind. Don’t forget your camera!
