About Us

Orr's Hill Army

The Orr's Hill Army Museum is a fascinating open-air military museum located in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. Positioned beautifully atop a scenic hill at Plantain Point, it sits right inside the active 22 Army Division Headquarters. This unique museum is dedicated to preserving the country's modern military heritage, focusing heavily on hardware, weapons, and vehicles used during the Sri Lankan Civil War between 1983 and 2009.

Unlike typical museums where you can only look from afar, this place offers an interactive experience where history comes alive. It features a vast collection of decommissioned military equipment, ranging from heavy artillery to rare, improvised combat vehicles. Because of its elevated location, a stroll through the museum grounds provides an exceptional mix of historical education and breathtaking, panoramic views of Trincomalee’s deep water natural harbor.

📌Why Should You Visit

🌟 One of a Kind Collection: It is the only place in Sri Lanka where such a massive collection of military hardware is openly displayed on the grounds of an active base.

🌟 See Real Ingenuity: You can view incredibly rare, improvised combat vehicles and watercraft built by altering civilian technology during times of resource scarcity.

🌟 Stunning Landscape: The hilltop spot offers peaceful, sweeping views of Trincomalee Bay and the harbor, making it an excellent spot for photography especially during the late afternoon.

🌟 Family Friendly: It serves as a highly educational and exciting adventure for families, history buffs, and anyone curious about the modern history of Sri Lanka.

Visiting this museum gives you a very humbling and eye-opening experience. Walking past genuine pieces of history lets you feel the true scale and technical complexity of the past conflict. The friendly and knowledgeable military officers on duty add a unique touch, as they are always ready to share insights and answer your questions. It perfectly balances a solemn, respectful look at military sacrifices with a fun, hands-on learning environment where you can touch the history around you.

📌Important Tips and Guides

⚠️ Bring Your ID: Because the museum sits inside an active military base facility, officers at the checkpoint will check your identification documents (NIC or Passport) before letting you enter.

⚠️ Beat the Heat: Trincomalee can get incredibly warm. It is highly recommended to wear a hat, apply sunscreen, and bring an umbrella or a water bottle along.
