About Us

Kanneliya Rainforest

Kanneliya Rainforest is a hidden green paradise located in the Galle district of Sri Lanka. It is part of the KDN forest complex (Kanneliya-Dediyagala-Nakiyadeniya) and is the second-largest rainforest on the island after Sinharaja. This forest is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, meaning it is protected because it has so many unique plants and animals. The forest is full of tall trees, winding streams, and beautiful waterfalls. It is a very peaceful place where you can hear the birds singing and the water flowing. Because it is less crowded than other famous parks, you can really enjoy nature in silence. Whether you love hiking or just want to see some cool animals, Kanneliya is a great place to explore.

📌  Why Should You Visit

Unmatched Biodiversity: It is home to many animals and plants that you cannot find anywhere else  in the world.

Beautiful Waterfalls: There are stunning waterfalls where you can take a cool, natural bath.

Great Hiking: The trails are exciting but not too difficult, making it perfect for adventure lovers.

Bird Watching: If you like birds, you can see many colorful species here.

Peace and Quiet: It is much calmer and more private than the more famous Sinharaja forest.

  📌 Other Important Details

↔️ Status: UNESCO recognized it as a Biosphere Reserve in 2004.

↔️ Unique Trees: Over half of the woody plants found here are endemic (only found in Sri Lanka).

↔️ Wildlife: You can spot monkeys, snakes, lizards, and many rare butterflies.

↔️ Water Source: The forest helps feed two big rivers in the south—the Gin River and the Nilwala River.

 📌 Things to Do There

🌟 Hike to Kabbale Mountain: A challenging climb that gives you a amazing "birds-eye" view of the whole forest.

🌟 Visit Narangas Ella Waterfall: A beautiful waterfall hidden deep in the jungle.

🌟 See the Giant Navada Tree: This is a massive, ancient tree that has a special viewing platform.

🌟 Take a Natural Bath: You can swim in the clear, cold water of the Anagi Mala Ella waterfall.

🌟 Nature Photography: Capture photos of rare insects, colorful birds, and lush green views.

 📌 How to Get There

🚗 By Car: From Galle: It is about 35km away. You can take the Udugama Road to reach the Panangala area where the entrance is.

🚌 By Bus: You can take a bus from Galle to Udugama, and then a Three-wheeler (tuk-tuk) to the Kanneliya Conservation Center.

🛣️ From Colombo: You can take the Southern Expressway, exit at Galle or Pinnaduwa, and then drive toward Udugama.

📌 What Experience Can Visitors Get

Visitors get a true "Jungle Book" experience. Walking through the thick trees feels like entering a different world. You will feel the fresh, damp air and hear the constant hum of insects. The best part is the feeling of adventure when you cross small streams or find a hidden waterfall. It’s a very refreshing experience for your mind and body, away from the busy city life.

 📌 Important Tips and Guides

Leech Protection: There are many leeches here! Wear long socks or use "leech lime"/salt to keepthem away.

Wear Good Shoes: The paths can be slippery and muddy, so wear shoes with a good grip.

Stay Hydrated: Bring your own water, but please do not leave plastic inside the forest.

Best Time to Visit: December to February is great for waterfalls. March to April is best for dry tiking rails.

Guides: It is better to hire a local guide at the entrance. They help you find the way and spot hiddenanimals.

Kanneliya Rainforest is a must-visit for anyone who loves nature and adventure. It is a place where you can see rare wildlife, swim in pure water, and enjoy the true beauty of Sri Lanka. It’s a green treasure that everyone should see at least once!
