Ananda Sastralaya in Kotte is home to an ancient underground tunnel and some very old trees 🌳. These historical sites are connected to legends 📜, archaeology 🏛️, and Sri Lanka’s rich past .
Beneath the school grounds 🏫, there is a hidden underground tunnel ⛏️, carved into red laterite rock (kabook) 🪨. Inside, you’ll find a small stupa 🛕 and a chamber, located about 2 meters underground.

🌓 A moonstone (a traditional decorative stone) at the bottom of the stairs.
🏛️ A chamber about 18 feet wide and 35 feet long, with the stupa at the center.
According to local stories 📜, this tunnel was once part of a secret underground network 🕳️ leading all the way to Colombo Fort 🏰.
One famous tale says that Princess Suriya Devi 👸, the wife of Prince Veediya Bandara 🤴, built this tunnel to help her husband escape from the Portuguese 🚢. Some believe parts of this tunnel have been found in Colombo.
In 2014, researchers confirmed the existence of the underground chamber and stupa 🛕. They found that the entire space was carefully carved from rock, making it an important historical site 📜.
The school grounds also have several trees over 100 years old. These massive trees provide shade 🌿 and create a cool, peaceful atmosphere for students and visitors.
In December 2024, the Department of Archaeology 🏛️ suggested cutting down some of these trees to prevent rainwater flooding 🌧️ the tunnel. They were worried about standing water, which could cause health issues like dengue fever 🦟.
However, the Past Pupils Association 🚸 strongly opposed this idea. They want to protect the trees 🌳 and find other ways to preserve the tunnel without harming nature.

කෝට්ටේ ආනන්ද ශාස්ත්‍රාලය පුරාණ භූගත උමගක් සහ ඉතා පැරණි ගස් කිහිපයකට නිවහන වේ. මෙම ඓතිහාසික ස්ථාන ජනප්‍රවාද, පුරාවිද්‍යාව සහ ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ පොහොසත් අතීතයට සම්බන්ධ වේ.
පාසල් භූමියට පහළින්, රතු ලැටරයිට් පර්වතයකින් (කුබුක්) කැටයම් කරන ලද සැඟවුණු භූගත උමගක් ඇත. ඇතුළත, ඔබට මීටර් 2 ක් පමණ භූගතව පිහිටා ඇති කුඩා ස්තූපයක් සහ කුටියක් හමුවනු ඇත.

🏛️ අඩි 18 ක් පමණ පළල සහ අඩි 35 ක් දිග කුටියක්, මධ්‍යයේ
දේශීය කථා වලට අනුව, මෙම උමග කලක් කොළඹ කොටුව දක්වා දිවෙන රහසිගත භූගත ජාලයක කොටසක් විය.
ප්‍රසිද්ධ කතාවක පවසන්නේ වීදිය බණ්ඩාර කුමරුගේ බිරිඳ වන සූරිය දේවි කුමරිය තම සැමියාට පෘතුගීසීන්ගෙන් පැන යාමට උපකාර කිරීම සඳහා මෙම උමග ඉදිකර ඇති බවයි. සමහරු විශ්වාස කරන්නේ මෙම උමගෙහි කොටස් කොළඹින් සොයාගෙන ඇති බවයි.
2014 දී, පර්යේෂකයන් භූගත කුටිය සහ ස්තූපයේ පැවැත්ම තහවුරු කළහ. මුළු අවකාශයම පර්වතයෙන් ප්‍රවේශමෙන් කැටයම් කර ඇති බව ඔවුන් සොයා ගත් අතර එය වැදගත් ඓතිහාසික ස්ථානයක් බවට පත් කළේය.
පාසල් භූමියේ වසර 100 කට වඩා පැරණි ගස් කිහිපයක් ද ඇත. මෙම දැවැන්ත ගස් සෙවන සපයන අතර සිසුන්ට සහ අමුත්තන්ට සිසිල්, සාමකාමී වාතාවරණයක් නිර්මාණය කරයි.
2024 දෙසැම්බර් මාසයේදී, පුරාවිද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව යෝජනා කළේ වැසි ජලය උමඟට ගලා ඒම වැළැක්වීම සඳහා මෙම ගස් කිහිපයක් කපා දැමීමටයි. ඩෙංගු උණ වැනි සෞඛ්‍ය ගැටළු ඇති කළ හැකි ස්ථාවර ජලය ගැන ඔවුන් කනස්සල්ලට පත්ව සිටියහ.
කෙසේ වෙතත්, ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය සංගමය මෙම අදහසට දැඩි ලෙස විරුද්ධ විය. ඔවුන්ට අවශ්‍ය වන්නේ ගස් ආරක්ෂා කිරීමට සහ සොබාදහමට හානි නොකර උමඟ සංරක්ෂණය කිරීමට වෙනත් ක්‍රම සොයා ගැනීමටයි.
