Velankanni Church in Uchchamuni, Kalpitiya

 A New Beacon of Faith

The Velankanni Church, recently constructed on the peaceful island of Uchchamuni in Kalpitiya, stands as a promising new center of faith and devotion. Dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health, the church reflects the deep Marian devotion rooted in the region, inspired by the world-renowned Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health in Velankanni, India.

Opening Ceremony

The church was officially declared open on July 22, 2023, marking a joyous milestone for the Catholic community in Uchchamuni. The opening was celebrated with heartfelt enthusiasm, drawing participation from residents, clergy, and faithful from surrounding areas. The event symbolized hope, unity, and a renewed spiritual journey for the island’s Christian population.

Community Preparation and Involvement

In the days leading up to the opening, the local community came together in a remarkable show of unity and reverence. Residents worked hand in hand to clean and beautify the church premises, demonstrating their deep pride and devotion. These collective efforts reflected not just excitement for the new church, but also the strong bonds within the island community.

Spiritual and Cultural Significance

The construction of the Velankanni Church adds a new dimension to Kalpitiya’s rich Christian heritage. It offers a sacred space for worship, prayer, and pilgrimage, especially for those seeking the intercession of Our Lady of Good Health. The church is expected to attract pilgrims and visitors from across Sri Lanka, becoming both a spiritual sanctuary and a cultural landmark in the region.
