Buddhangala Sanctuary

Buddhangala Sanctuary is a very old and peaceful Buddhist forest monastery located in the Ampara district of Sri Lanka. It is spread across a massive 1,280 acres of land and is built on five big rocky hills. This place is not just a temple. It is a protected nature area where you can find thick jungles and wild animals. History says this place started more than 2,300 years ago during the time of the Digamadulla Kingdom. For a long time, it was hidden by the forest until a monk found it again in 1964.

🚌 By Bus: Take a bus from Colombo to Ampara (this is a long journey, about 7–8 hours). From the Ampara bus stand, you can take a local bus or a taxi to the sanctuary.

🚂 By Train: You can take a train to Batticaloa or Kandy and then catch a bus to Ampara.
