Buduruwagala Raja Maha Viharaya

Buduruwagala is a very old and beautiful Buddhist temple found in the Moneragala district, near a town called Wellawaya. The name itself means “the rock of Buddhist sculptures.” It is famous for having seven giant statues carved right into the face of a huge rock. The most amazing part is the standing Buddha statue in the middle, which is about 51 feet tall! This makes it the tallest standing Buddha statue in all of Sri Lanka. These carvings are more than 1,000 years old, dating back to the 9th or 10th century.
