Kiri Vehera is a very famous and sacred Buddhist stupa located in the holy city of Kataragama. It is one of the most important places for Buddhists in Sri Lanka. This beautiful, white stupa stands tall near the Menik River and is surrounded by a peaceful environment. People believe it was built a long time ago, even before the 3rd century BC.
You should visit Kiri Vehera because it is a place of deep peace and history.
⚪ Pure White Beauty: The stupa is always painted in a bright white color, looking very calm against the blue sky.
🙏 Spiritual Peace: It is a perfect place to meditate and feel quiet in your mind.
🏛️ Ancient History: It is one of the “Solosmasthana” (the 16 most sacred places visited by Lord Buddha in Sri Lanka).
🤝 Unity: It is located very close to the Kataragama Hindu Temple, showing how different religions live together.
The stupa is about 95 feet high. It is said that Lord Buddha visited this spot during his third visit to Sri Lanka. King Mahasena is credited with building the stupa on the ground where Lord Buddha sat. The area is filled with old trees and is very close to the famous Kataragama Devalaya.
🌸 Offer Flowers: You can buy lotus flowers near the entrance and offer them at the altar.
🕯️ Light Oil Lamps: Join the locals in lighting traditional oil lamps and incense sticks.
🚶 Walk Around (Pradakshina): Walk slowly around the stupa in a clockwise direction to show respect.
🧘 Meditation: Sit quietly under the shade of the large Bo trees and meditate.
📸 Capture the Peace: Take photos of the stupa, but remember to be respectful of the worshipers.
📍 Location: It is in the town of Kataragama in the Monaragala District.
🚗 By Car/Bus: You can drive from Colombo (about 6-7 hours) via the Southern Expressway.
🚶 Walking: Once you reach the Kataragama temple complex, Kiri Vehera is just a short, beautiful walk (about 15-20 minutes) along a shaded path.
Visitors get a feeling of calmness and protection. When you walk the path between the Kataragama Devalaya and Kiri Vehera, you hear the sounds of bells and chanting, which makes you feel very relaxed. It is a great place to escape the busy life and find some inner quietness.
👕 Dress Code: Wear white or light-colored clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. This is a very holy place.
👣 No Shoes: You must remove your shoes and hats before entering the stupa area.
🐵 Watch the Monkeys: There are many monkeys around. Keep your food hidden and don’t try to feed them from your hand.
🥤 Stay Hydrated: The weather in Kataragama can be very hot, so bring plenty of water.

කිරිවෙහෙර යනු පූජනීය කතරගම පුදබිමේ පිහිටි ඉතාමත් ගෞරවනීය සහ ඓතිහාසික බෞද්ධ ස්තූපයකි. මෙය ශ්රී ලාංකික බෞද්ධ ජනතාවගේ අති පූජනීය ස්ථානවලින් එකක් ලෙස සැලකේ. මැණික් ගඟ අසල ඉතා සාමකාමී වටපිටාවක පිහිටා ඇති මෙම සුදු පැහැති මනරම් චෛත්යය, ක්රිස්තු පූර්ව 3 වන සියවසටත් වඩා පැරණි ඉතිහාසයකට උරුමකම් කියයි.
සිතට සහ ගතට සැනසීමක් ලබා ගැනීමට කැමති ඔබ කිරිවෙහෙර වැඳපුදා ගත යුතුම හේතු කිහිපයක් මෙන්න:
⚪ නිර්මල සුදු පැහැය: නිල් අහස පසුබිම් කරගෙන ඉතාමත් ප්රසන්න ලෙස දිස්වන මෙම ස්තූපය දකින විට සිතට මහත් සන්සුන් බවක් දැනේ.
🙏 ආධ්යාත්මික සුවය: භාවනා කිරීමට සහ කාර්යබහුල ජීවිතයෙන් මිදී නිදහසේ සිටීමට මෙය කදිම ස්ථානයකි.
🏛️ ඓතිහාසික වැදගත්කම: මෙය බුදුන් වහන්සේ වැඩම කළ ශ්රී ලංකාවේ “සොළොස්මස්ථාන” (පූජනීය ස්ථාන 16) අතරින් එකකි.
🤝 ආගමික සමගිය: කතරගම මහා දේවාලය අසලම පිහිටා තිබීමෙන් විවිධ ආගමිකයන් අතර ඇති සහජීවනය මෙහිදී මනාව දිස්වේ.
මෙම ස්තූපය අඩි 95ක් පමණ උසින් යුක්ත වේ. බුදුන් වහන්සේ ලංකාවට වැඩම කළ තෙවන වර මෙහි වැඩසිටි බව විශ්වාස කෙරේ. බුදුන් වහන්සේ වැඩසිටි ඒ උතුම් භූමියේ මහාසේන රජතුමා විසින් මෙම චෛත්යය ඉදි කළ බව ඉතිහාසයේ සඳහන් වේ. පෞරාණික වටිනාකමකින් යුතු ගස් කොළන් වලින් වට වූ මෙම ප්රදේශය ඉතාම රමණීයයි.
🌸 මල් පූජා කිරීම: පිවිසුම අසලින් නෙළුම් මල් මිලදී ගෙන බුදුන් වහන්සේ උදෙසා පූජා කළ හැකියි.
🕯️ පහන් දැල්වීම: සම්ප්රදායිකව තෙල් පහන් සහ හඳුන්කූරු දල්වා පින් රැස් කරගත හැකියි.
🚶 වටවන්දනාව: ස්තූපය වටා ප්රදක්ෂිණා කරමින් ගෞරවය දැක්වීම.
🧘 භාවනා කිරීම: විශාල බෝ වෘක්ෂවල සෙවණේ හිඳ සන්සුන්ව භාවනා කිරීම.
📸 ඡායාරූප ගැනීම: ස්තූපයේ සහ අවට සුන්දරත්වය ඡායාරූපයට නැගිය හැකි වුවත්, වන්දනාකරුවන්ට බාධා නොවන සේ කටයුතු කිරීමට වගබලා ගන්න.
📍 පිහිටීම: මොණරාගල දිස්ත්රික්කයේ කතරගම පූජා නගරය තුළ පිහිටා ඇත.
🚗 වාහනයකින්: කොළඹ සිට දක්ෂිණ අධිවේගී මාර්ගය හරහා පැය 6-7 කින් පමණ ළඟා විය හැකියි.
🚶 පයින් යාම: කතරගම දේවාලයට ගිය පසු, එතැන් සිට සෙවණ ඇති මනරම් මාවත දිගේ විනාඩි 15-20ක් පමණ පයින් ගමන් කළ විට කිරිවෙහෙර හමුවේ.
මෙම පුදබිමට පිවිසෙන ඕනෑම අයෙකුට ලැබෙන්නේ මහත් ආරක්ෂිත සහ සන්සුන් හැඟීමකි. කතරගම දේවාලයේ සිට කිරිවෙහෙර දක්වා දිවෙන මාවතේ ඇවිද යන විට ඇසෙන ඝණ්ඨා නාදය සහ පිරිත් හඬ ඔබව වෙනස්ම ලෝකයකට රැගෙන යනු ඇත.
👕 ඇඳුම් පැළඳුම්: පූජනීය ස්ථානයක් බැවින් උරහිස් සහ දණහිස් වැසෙන සේ සුදු හෝ ලා පැහැති චාම් ඇඳුම් ඇඳීම සුදුසුයි.
👣 පාවහන් ඉවත් කිරීම: ස්තූපය පිහිටි වැලි මළුවට ඇතුළු වීමට පෙර සපත්තු සහ තොප්පි ඉවත් කළ යුතුය.
🐵 වඳුරන් ගැන සැලකිලිමත් වන්න: අවට වඳුරන් බොහෝ සිටින බැවින්, ඔබ සතු ආහාර පාන ප්රවේශමෙන් තබා ගන්න. ඔවුන්ට අතින් ආහාර දීමට උත්සාහ නොකරන්න.
🥤 ජලය පානය කරන්න: කතරගම ප්රදේශය බොහෝ විට ඉතා රස්නයෙන් යුක්ත බැවින් නිතර ජලය පානය කිරීම වැදගත් වේ.
කිරිවෙහෙර යනු ලාංකීය සංස්කෘතියේ සහ බෞද්ධ ඉතිහාසයේ අසිරිය විඳීමට කැමති ඕනෑම අයෙකු අනිවාර්යයෙන්ම නැරඹිය යුතු ස්ථානයකි. දකුණු පළාතේ සංචාරය කරන ඔබගේ ගමන් සැලසුමට මෙම උතුම් පුදබිම ඇතුළත් කර ගැනීමට අමතක නොකරන්න.
