Right by the side of the peaceful Kalu River and along the busy Colombo–Galle Road stands Kalutara Bodhiya, a truly special place in the heart of Kalutara. This sacred Bodhi tree isn’t just a tree—it’s a living soul of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist roots, offering calmness, blessings, and strength to everyone who visits.
The Kalutara Bodhiya is said to be one of 32 precious saplings grown from the holy Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura—the very tree under which Lord Buddha found enlightenment. These saplings were planted across Sri Lanka over 2,000 years ago to spread peace and the teachings of the Dhamma, guided by Arahant Mahinda himself.
So when you stand here, you’re not just under a tree—you’re standing with history, love, and spiritual power.
✨ In 1042 AD, a prince named Wickrema Pandya planted another Bodhi tree here, adding to its sacred strength.
✨ During colonial times, the Portuguese, Dutch, and British tried to change the area, using it for military and government work. But the Bodhiya stood strong.
✨ In the 1800s, when the British planned to remove the tree for a railway bridge, the people of Kalutara didn’t let it happen. Thanks to a kind-hearted man named Sandanayake Upasaka, and many others, the tree was saved—and the bridge was built around it instead. That moment still shows how powerful faith and unity can be.
✨ 1931 – The Kalutara Buddhist Society was started to protect the site.
✨ 1948 – After Sri Lanka’s independence, thanks to Sir Cyril de Zoysa, all unrelated buildings were removed from the temple grounds.
✨ 1951 – The Kalutara Bodhi Trust (KBT) was born to keep this place sacred, while also helping people around the country.
KBT is more than just a protector of the Bodhiya. It’s a kind-hearted organization doing so much good for Sri Lanka:

🌳 ඉතා කාර්යබහුල කොළඹ-ගාලු පාර අසල කළු ගග අද්දර ඉතා සුන්දරවූ වටපිටාවක කළුතර නගර මධ්‍යයේ කළුතර බෝධිය පිහිටා තිබේ. එය කළුතර නගර මධ්‍යයයේ පිහිටි සැබවින්ම සුවිශේෂී ස්ථානයකි. මෙම පූජනීය බෝධි වෘක්ෂය හුදෙක් වෘක්ෂයක් නොවේ – එය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ බෞද්ධ මූලයන් හි ජීවමාන සලකුණක් වන අතර, එම බෝධීන්වහන්සේ වන්දනාමාන කරන සැමදෙනටම සිත් සුවයත්, එහි ආශිර්වාදය සහ ශක්තියත් නොඅඩුව ලබා දෙයි.
කළුතර බෝධිය, බුදුරජාණන් වහන්සේ බුද්ධත්වයට පත් වූ වෘක්ෂය වන ශ්‍රී මහා බෝධීන්වහන්සේ ගේ දෙවන පෙළ අංකුරයකි. එනම් එය අනුරාධපුරයේ පිහිටි ජය ශ්‍රී මහා බෝධීන් වහන්සේගෙන් වැඩුණු අනර්ඝ අංකුර 32 න් එකක් බව පැවසේ. මීට වසර 2000 කට පමණ පෙර මිහිඳු මහරහතන් වහන්සේ විසින්ම මෙහෙයවන ලද සාමය සහ ධර්මයේ ඉගැන්වීම් ශ්‍රී ලංකාව පුරා ව්‍යාප්ත කිරීමේ වැඩසටහන දී මෙම අංකුර ශ්‍රී ලංකාව පුරා රෝපණය කරන ලදී.
එබැවින් ඔබ මෙම වෘක්ෂයේ සෙවණ යට සිටින විට, ඔබ සිටින්නේ හුදෙක් සාමාන්‍ය ගසක සෙවණයට පමණක් නොවේ – ඔබ ශුද්ධ වූත් ඓතිහාසිකත්වයත් අධ්‍යාත්මික බලයත් මුසුවූ වෘක්ෂයකින් රැකවරණය ලබයි.
✨ ක්‍රිස්තු වර්ෂ 1042 දී වික්‍රම පාණ්ඩ්‍ය නම් කුමාරයෙක් මෙහි පූජනීයත්වය තවත් වැඩිකරමින් එහි තවත් බෝධියක් රෝපණය කළේ ය.
✨ යටත් විජිත සමයේදී, පෘතුගීසි, ලන්දේසි සහ බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයන් එම ප්‍රදේශය හමුදා සහ රජයේ කටයුතු සඳහා යොදා ගනිමින් වෙනස් කිරීමට උත්සාහ කළ ද ඒ සියල්ල ව්‍යර්ථ විය.
✨ 1800 ගණන්වල ඉංග්‍රීසීන් දුම්රිය පාලමක් ඉදිකිරීම සඳහා ගස ඉවත් කිරීමට සැලසුම් කරන ලදි. නමුත් කළුතර ජනතාව විසින් එය වලක්වන ලදි. සන්දනායක උපාසක මහතා සහ කිහිපදෙනෙක් මේ සදහා මූලික වී කටයුතු කරන ලදි. අවසන බෝධීන්වහන්සේ මගහැර කළුතර පාලම ඉංග්‍රීසින් විසින් තනන ලදි. එමගින් එහි ඇති ප්‍රබල අධ්‍යාත්මික බලය හා කළුතර ජනතාවගේ එකමුතුකම ප්‍රදර්ශනය විය.
✨ 1931 දී කළුතර බෝධීන්වහන්සේ සංරක්ෂණය සදහා , කළුතර බෞද්ධ සමිතිය ආරම්භ කරන ලදී.
✨ 1948 – ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට නිදහස ලැබීමෙන් පසු, ශ්‍රීමත් සිරිල් ද සොයිසා මහතාගේ මැදිහත්වීමෙන්, පන්සල් භූමියෙහි පිහිටි පන්සලට අදාල නොවූ සියලු ගොඩනැගිලි පන්සල් බිමෙන් ඉවත් කරන ලදී.
✨ 1951 – මෙම ස්ථානය පූජනීය ලෙස තබා ගැනීමටත්, රට වටා සිටින ජනතාවට උපකාර කිරීමටත් කළුතර බෝධි භාරය (KBT) පිහිටවනු ලැබීය.
🙏 කළුතර බෝධි භාරය වර්තමානයේ සිදු කරන සේවාවන්
KBT යනු කලුතර බෝධියේ ආරක්ෂකයෙකු පමණක් නොවේ. එය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවෙ බොහෝ පිරිසකට යහපත් සේවාවන් රැසක් කරන සුවිශේසී සංවිධානයකි. ඉන් සපයන සේවා කිහිපයක් නම්,
❤️ පන්සල සහ අවට අධ්‍යාත්මික ස්ථාන බලා ගැනීම
🩸 පෝය දිනවල ලේ දන් දීමේ පුන්‍යකර්ම සංවිධානය කිරීම
🏥 පාසල්, රෝහල් සහ අවශ්‍යතා ඇති පුද්ගලයින්ට උපකාර කිරීම
🐾 සතුන්ට සත්කාර කරන අතර සියලු ජීවීන් කෙරෙහි කරුණාව ප්‍රවර්ධනය කිරීම සිදුකරයි.
🛐 ආශිර්වාදයෙන් පිරුණු කළුතර බෝධීන්වහන්සේ වන්දනාමාන කිරීමට
දිනපතා විවිධ තරාතිරම්වල මිනිස්සු මෙහි එති.
🧘 බැතිමත්තු සෙවණ යට වාඩි වී මල් පුදා නිහඬව බෝධීන්වහන්සේ වන්දනා කරති.
🧳 මෙතනින් ගමන් ගන්නා කවුරුන් වුවද ඔවුන්ගේ ගමනට ආශිර්වාද පතා මෙහි නතර වී පඩුරු පුදා යයි.

🌳 කළුතර බෝධිය යනු බුදුන් වහන්සේ බුද්ධත්වයට පත් වූ වෘක්ෂයට ඍජු සම්බන්ධකම් කියන සුවිශේෂී වූ වෘක්ෂයකි.
🌊 සන්සුන් සුන්දර ගං ඉවුර ඔබට නිදහසේ හුස්ම ගැනීමටත්, සිත සන්සුන් කර ගැනීමටත්, අපූරු පරිසරයක් නිර්මාණය කරයි.
💛 අධ්‍යාත්මික බලය සහ එකමුතුකම පිලිඹිබු කරන ජීවමාන සලකුණකි.
එනම් ඇදහිල්ල තුලින් ලැබෙන අධ්‍යාත්මික බලය සහ මානව සංහතියේ එකමුතුකම තුලින් ඕනෑම දෙයක් එනම් කාලය, යුද්දය, වෙනස්වීම පවා නොවෙනස්ව පවත්වා ගන්නේ කෙසේද යන්න පිළිබඳ පෙන්වන ජීවමාන උදාහරණයකි කළුතර බෝධීන්වහන්සේ.
කළුතර බෝධිය යනු හුදෙක් සංචාරක ස්තානයක් පමණක් නොවේ. ඒවනාහි බුදුරජානන් වහන්සේගේ බුද්ධත්වය දැනෙන්නාවූ ස්ථානයකි. එවන් ස්තානයක් වැදපුදාගෙන එහි ආශිර්වාදයත් මානසික සුවයත් ඔබ තුලට ලබා ගන්න.
