Sigiriya

Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is a huge rock fortress located in the middle of Sri Lanka. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” This giant rock rises nearly 200 meters (660 feet) straight up from the jungle. On top of this rock, an ancient king named Kashyapa built his palace about 1,500 years ago. Today, it is famous for its beautiful gardens, ancient paintings (frescoes), and the giant lion paws at the entrance.

📌 How to Get There 

Sigiriya is located in the Matale District, near the town of Dambulla.

🚌 From Colombo: It is about a 4-hour drive. You can take a bus to Dambulla and then a tuk-tuk or bus to Sigiriya.

🚌 From Kandy: It is about a 2.5-hour drive. Many tourists take a day trip from Kandy.

✈️ By Air: You can fly from Colombo to the Sigiriya domestic airport (Cinnamon Air) if you want a quick trip.

⚠️ Start Early: The best time to climb is early morning (around 7:00 AM) or late afternoon (around 3:30 PM) to avoid the hot sun.

⚠️ Clothing: Unlike temples, there is no strict dress code, but wear comfortable clothes and good walking shoes. Avoid very short skirts because of the steep stairs.

⚠️ Wasps: Be quiet. There are giant wasp nests on the rock. Loud noises can disturb them.
