Pahiyangala Cave

Pahiyangala Cave, also known as Fa Hien Cave, is a very special place in Sri Lanka. It is famous for being the largest natural rock cave in all of Asia. It is huge! The cave is located in a quiet village called Yatagampitiya in the Kalutara District.

Legend says that a famous Chinese monk named Fa Hien lived here a long time ago (around the 5th century) while he was traveling to Adam’s Peak. That is how the cave got its name. But even before the monk, people lived here for thousands of years. It is a mix of nature, history, and a peaceful temple all in one spot.

↔️ Jewelry: Beads made from shark teeth and sea shells were found, showing these cave people traveled to the sea or traded.

↔️ First Archers: Evidence suggests people here used bows and arrows nearly 48,000 years ago, which is the earliest evidence of arrow usage outside of Africa!

Getting there is an adventure but not too hard. It is about 2 hours from Colombo.

By Bus:

🚌 Take a bus from Colombo to Horana (Route 120).

🚌 From Horana, take a bus to Bulathsinhala (Route 285).

🚌 From Bulathsinhala town, you can take a Tuk-tuk directly to the cave (about 5-7 km).

By Car / Bike:

🚗 Take the Southern Expressway and exit at Gelanigama.

🚗 Drive towards Horana and then to Bulathsinhala.

🚗 Use Google Maps for “Pahiyangala Cave” to find the exact turn.

📌Visitor Experience

When you first walk up the stone steps and enter the cave, you will feel very small because the rock is so big above you. It is usually cool and windy inside, which feels nice after the climb. It is very quiet and peaceful. You get a feeling of mystery thinking about the cavemen who lived right where you are standing thousands of years ago.

⚠️ Safety: The floor can be a bit slippery, so watch your step.

⚠️ Dress Code: Since there is a temple inside, please wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. You will need to take off your hat and shoes near the temple area.

⚠️ Leeches: If it is a rainy day, there might be leeches on the path up. Wear long pants or bring some salt/balm.

⚠️ Water: Bring a bottle of water with you. The climb up the stairs can make you thirsty.
