A Journey Through History and Heritage
Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka’s gem-rich city, the National Museum of Ratnapura is a gateway to the island’s fascinating past. Officially opened on May 13, 1988, the museum is housed in the Ehelepola Walauwa, once the stately residence of Ehelepola Nilame, a prominent figure in the Kingdom of Kandy.
Ehelepola Walauwa, the museum’s home, once belonged to Ehelepola Nilame, who served as the 1st Adigar (Chief Minister) under King Sri Vikrama Rajasinha (1798–1815), the last monarch of Sri Lanka. As the Disawe (Governor) of Ratnapura, Ehelepola was a key administrative leader. Today, his grand residence serves a new purpose—preserving the cultural and historical treasures of the Sabaragamuwa Province.
The museum boasts a rich collection of archaeological, geological, zoological, and anthropological exhibits that narrate Sri Lanka’s vibrant history and biodiversity. Some notable highlights include:
🦴 Prehistoric artifacts and fossils discovered in the Sabaragamuwa region
💍 Traditional Kandyan jewelry such as necklaces, bangles, anklets, and earrings
⚔️ Ancient weaponry, including Sinhala swords and a Vickers machine gun from World War I
🍳 Traditional cookware, including a rare tripod pan used to make Kiri Roti (rice flour cakes)
A standout feature of the museum is its Palaeobiodiversity Park, showcasing life-sized models of extinct animal species believed to have once roamed the region. This immersive park offers a rare glimpse into Sri Lanka’s prehistoric wildlife, captivating both history buffs and nature lovers alike.
Whether you’re fascinated by Sri Lankan history, ancient gems, fossils, or traditional culture, the National Museum of Ratnapura promises an enriching journey into the island’s heritage. Located in the “City of Gems,” this hidden gem is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling through Ratnapura.
