Flood Plains National Park, established in 1984, is a critical protected area along the Mahaweli River, serving as a key migration route for elephants between Wasgamuwa and Somawathiya National Parks. Located 222 km northeast of Colombo, this biodiverse wetland sanctuary is renowned for its seasonal floodplains (“villus”), rich wildlife, and ancient historical connections.

Flood Plains ජාතික උද්‍යානය, 1984 වසරේ ස්ථාපිත වූයේ ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ දිගුම මහා ගඟ වන මහවැලි ගඟට අසළ පිහිටි වඩාත්ම වැදගත් වනජීවී සංරක්ෂණ කලාපයක් ලෙසිනි. මෙය වස්ගමුව සහ සෝමාවතිය ජාතික උද්‍යාන අතර අලියන්ගේ මාරු මාර්ගයක් ලෙස කටයුතු කරයි. කොළඹ සිට කි.මී. 222ක් උතුරුනැගෙනහිරට පිහිටා ඇති මෙය, කාලීන ජලාස්ථිති (විලු), අතිවිශාල ජීව විවිධත්වයක් සහ පැරණි ඉතිහාසය පිරුණු සන්සුන් සහිත තෙත්බිම් සන්රක්ෂණ කලාපයකි.

ජල වාතාවරණය: වියළි කලාපය (සාමාන්‍ය උෂ්ණත්වය – 27°C | වාර්ෂික වර්ෂාව – ~1,650mm)
ප්‍රධාන ලක්ෂණය: වසන් සමයේ ජලාශවලින් යුත් විලු තෙත්බිම්, අලි මෙන්ම ජලජ ජීවයන් සඳහා උචිත ආහාර ප්‍රදේශ බවට පත්වේ.

🐆 දුර්ලභ සතුන්: ලේපර්ඩ්, මළු බළලා, සම්බර් දියා, කුඩු දියා
🦚 පක්ෂීන්: වසන් කාලීන සහ ශ්‍රී ලාංකික ආදී පක්ෂි විශේෂ සවිස්තරව හමුවේ
මැදුරු වනාන්තර: Terminalia arjuna, Madhuca longifolia වැනි වගාවන්
ජලජ ශාක: නෙලුම් (Nelumbo nucifera), Aponogeton වර්ග
කාලීන තණකොළ භූමි: වර්ෂාන්තිමට පසු පැළවෙමින් හරිත භූමියක් බවට පත්වී, සතුන්ට ආහාර සපයයි
පැරණි උරුමය: බිසෝකැටිය යුගයේ (ක්‍රි.පූ. 2 – 7) ගුහා ආශ්‍රම අවශේෂ සතුයි
සම්බන්ධ උද්‍යාන: සෝමාවතිය සහ වස්ගමුව එක්කර සන්රක්ෂණ කලාපයක් ලෙස සැලසුම් කර ඇත
තෙත්බිම් වැදගත්කම: ගංවතුර පාලනය, භූගත ජලය ආපිරීම, සහ ජීව විවිධත්වය සඳහා අත්‍යවශ්‍යයි
ළඟම නගරය: පොළොන්නරුව (තාක්ෂණිකව පැය 1.5–2ක දුර)
කොළඹ සිට: හබරණ හෝ පොළොන්නරුව මාර්ගයෙන් පැය 5–6ක්
වියළි කාලය (මැයි–සැප්තැම්බර්): සතුන් ජලය පසෙක වටා එකතුවන නිසා වඩාත් පහසුවෙන් දැකිය හැක
වර්ෂාන්තිම (නවැම්බර්–ජනවාරි): තෙත් වනාන්තර පරිසරය සහ ජීවිතයෙන් පිරුණු පක්ෂීන්
✅ මාර්ගෝපදේශක සහිත සෆාරි: අලියන් සහ ලේපර්ඩ් දැකීමට වඩාත් සුදුසුයි
✅ පක්ෂීන් නැරඹීම: දුරදර්ශන කාචයක් අරන් යන්න
⚠️ ආරක්ෂාව: අලියන් අසල වාහනවලින් බැහැන, වර්ෂා සමයේදී ජලය ගැලෙන්නාක් හැකි නිසා සෙරින
