The Colombo Museum, now the National Museum of Colombo, was founded with the vision of preserving Sri Lanka’s rich history and heritage. The Royal Asiatic Society (CB) played a crucial role in advocating for its establishment, and in 1876, architect J.G. Smither designed the museum in an elegant Italian architectural style.
Under the leadership of Dr. P. E. P. Deraniyagala, the museum expanded to an international level, earning national recognition. In 1942, the Department of National Museums was officially established, leading to:

👤 ආරම්භකයා: සර් විලියම් හෙන්රි ග්‍රෙගරි (සිලෝන් ගවර්ණර්)
ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ඉතිහාසය සහ සංස්කෘතිය සුරැකීමේ අරමුණින් Royal Asiatic Society වෙතින් විශේෂ සහය ලබා මෙම කෞතුකාගාරය ආරම්භ විය.
🛕 J.G. Smither විසින් 1876 දී ඉතාලි ශිල්පී ශෛලියෙන් නිර්මාණය කරන ලදි.
ඒ. පී. ඩෙරණියාගල මහතාගේ නායකත්වයෙන් කෞතුකාගාරය ජාත්‍යන්තර මට්ටමකට පත් විය.
