Aluvihare Rock Temple – A Sacred Buddhist Site in Sri Lanka   

The Aluvihare Rock Temple, also called Matale Alu Viharaya, is a famous Buddhist temple in Matale, Sri Lanka. It is about 30 km north of Kandy, along the Matale-Dambulla road. 🏛️ History of Aluvihare Rock Temple

🏺 Built During Ancient Times

The temple was built in the 3rd century BCE during the rule of King Devanampiyatissa 👑. He was the first Sri Lankan king to follow Buddhism, which was introduced by Arahat Mahinda, the son of Indian Emperor Ashoka. The king built the temple, a stupa (dagoba) 🛕, and planted a Bo tree 🌿 (sacred fig tree) to mark the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

✍️ Writing Down the Pāli Canon

The temple is most famous for an event in the 1st century BCE during the time of King Walagamba. At that time, Sri Lanka faced wars ⚔️ and food shortages 🍚. Buddhist monks were worried that the Buddha’s teachings 📖, which had been passed down by memory 🧠, might be lost.

To protect them, about 500 monks gathered at Aluvihare Temple to write the teachings on palm leaves 🍃 using a metal stylus ✏️. This careful work helped preserve Theravāda Buddhism 🙏 for future generations.

🔥 Destruction and Rebuilding

In 1848, during the Matale Rebellion ⚔️, the temple was badly damaged, and many old Buddhist scriptures 📜 were destroyed. It took many years to rewrite them, and the full Tripiṭaka (Buddhist scriptures) 📚 was finally completed in 1982.
